Eight years after Eonian, Dimmu Borgir return with Grand Serpent Rising, a new studio album set for release on May 22 via Nuclear Blast. The record will feature 13 tracks that expand their signature sound, blending orchestral grandeur with black metal intensity.
Frontman Shagrath stated: “I genuinely feel we’ve outdone ourselves musically on this album. It’s been a long and demanding process, but seeing it come to life is incredibly rewarding. Grand Serpent Rising reflects every era of Dimmu Borgir; this record carries echoes of every chapter of our legacy. I think our fans will recognize that and find something that truly resonates with them.”
Guitarist Silenoz added insight into the album’s concept: “It fits perfectly. Dimmu Borgir is a large-scale leviathan and we are rising once again. While the serpent represents evil to some, to us it symbolizes renewal, growth, knowledge, and liberation. It’s our shedding of skin.”
The album was recorded in Gothenburg with producer Fredrik Nordström, known for his work on key releases like Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia and Death Cult Armageddon.
Alongside the announcement, the band unveiled the cinematic video for “Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel”, a Norwegian-language track exploring themes of heritage and lineage.
