Vulvodynia have officially begun their next chapter with “Twin Tyrants,” a standalone single released September 8 through Unique Leader Records. The track marks the first recorded material from the South African band featuring new vocalist Maya Pobst, who joined the lineup in July.
Pobst was directly involved in shaping the song, co-writing its lyrics with her partner and developing the vocal patterns alongside the rest of the band. She describes “Twin Tyrants” as a song about the internal struggle to establish a sense of identity and understand who you are meant to become.
Released with an accompanying video, the track retains Vulvodynia’s combination of slamming deathcore, brutal death metal and technical extremity while introducing Pobst as the new voice at the front of the band. It follows 2024’s Entabeni, Vulvodynia’s sixth full-length, which featured guitarist Lwandile Prusent handling vocals.
The current lineup consists of Pobst on vocals, Prusent, Luke Haarhoff and Kris Xenopoulos on guitars, Nate Gilbert on bass and Thomas Hughes on drums. “Twin Tyrants” has been announced as a standalone release, with the band promising further news in the near future.
