Mayhem has confirmed that they are currently in the studio working on a new full-length album. The Norwegian black metal band stated that both songwriting and recording are underway, with nearly twenty song ideas in development. This marks their first new studio material since Daemon was released in October 2019, ending a silence of over five years.
Bassist and founding member Jørn “Necrobutcher” Stubberud revealed that the process has been intentionally extended to avoid repeating past formulas. He explained that the album has been in development for several years, allowing the material to evolve naturally. He compared songwriting to painting, where every detail must be refined over time before the work is considered complete.
Necrobutcher and guitarist Teloch have both confirmed that around twenty ideas are currently in the works, including demos and early structures. While the final tracklist has not been confirmed, the volume of material suggests an advanced pre-production stage.
The album has no confirmed title or release date, but the band has indicated that recording is actively underway. This will be Mayhem’s first studio album since releasing the Atavistic Black Disorder / Kommando EP in 2021 and the live album Daemonic Rites in 2023, marking a significant return to the studio format after more than half a decade.
No tour or festival dates have been announced in connection with the album, but the news has sparked strong anticipation among fans. Mayhem remains one of the central and most influential acts in black metal since their formation in the 1980s.
