"The World Inside is the album I would like to be remembered for when I leave this world": Johnny Indovina, Human Drama

Human Drama is a cult band on the world gothic scene, even though they have never considered themselves a gothic band as such. Their extensive career has made them a benchmark on the scene and that is why they have decided to make a special show to commemorate their 35 years of existence. We talk about this and a little more with its indisputable reference Johnny Indovina.

Tell us a bit about your latest single "Into Our Escape"; a song full of melancholy and we could even say hopelessness

This topic is just a small piece of that huge puzzle from a stage of my life living in New York. The idea was born from a small room back in 1995 where I reflected one night, and composing this single made me remember that introspective trip on topics such as passion and despair that I analyzed that evening. So I decided to seek to transmit it and translate it into this beautiful song.

Loving relationships are often made up of one person who gives everything and another who does not appreciate it. Why is unrequited love attractive and even addictive to many people?

I think it is due to one person's fear of leaving and thinking that they will not be able to continue without the other person. The fear of losing whom we love as well as the many times believing without solid bases that a person loves us as we think; are two factors that can generate that dependency.

How would you describe your time in this love relationship on a personal level?

I can consider myself a very lucky person who has lived the happiness of feeling in love, but I don't think I am special or different enough for my story to be a reference; I am neither better nor worse than anyone. I have been fortunate to be able to capture many elements and stories in my themes, although not as such means they are my own experiences.

We know that you've been releasing singles instead of full albums for a while. What would Human Drama need to see as an industry change to release a full album again?

The truth is, I hate the way music is made today. There is no real connection to the younger audience with this way of releasing new material as just another product. Music as art is highly devalued and that does not leave an incentive for the artist, who only ends up making music to survive. I think you have to go against that trend and resume your closeness with people who really want to be in constant contact with the band. In this way of making music instead of being locked two or three years in the creative process and recording an entire album losing contact with our people, we opted to release a single and in two months be ready to give concerts again and always be close to the audience. That is why we do not stop and although it has been a great challenge, I am very satisfied with this way of working.

We know that he has worked with Mexican and American record labels in his career. What could you say is the biggest difference between them when collaborating?

I think that more than differences between nationalities I have found differences in terms of visions. A long time ago back in the eighties we signed with RCA which is a world record making machine. I have to confess it was a frustrating experience since they made us feel little special because they were not interested in the art behind the music but only that it served to make money: we basically felt like their hostages. Then we had the opportunity to work on Triple x records It is an independent label and there it was different: they were interested in the artistic issue and they made us feel like part of a family. We recently worked with the Mexican label Fonarte Latino and they have also supported us a lot. Diego its president has given us absolute freedom to work without question, and it is a very good situation to work with that level of trust and freedom.

Se acerca un gran espectáculo que celebra 35 años de carrera en el Teatro Metropólitan. ¿Qué se siente al decir “35 años de carrera”? Es más de lo que tengo de edad, por ejemplo.

I feel very lucky. These are years that we have stayed because people listen to us and that is why we are here. It is our followers that give us life and that with their loyalty and being aware of what we do give us this beautiful opportunity to live from what moves us. This artist life is the life I like to lead, I don't see myself doing anything else. I sacrificed everything for this dream and I don't regret anything, and it is thanks to the people that this dream is still a beautiful reality. So as long as people continue to give us their support, we will be seeing each other at the forty-year-old concert, and so on-laughs.

That day, in addition to classics of all time, you will play three of your most emblematic complete albums (Pin Ups, Cause and Effect and The World Inside) Which of them is your favorite and why?

Definitely "The World Inside". When I leave this world I would like my legacy and the work that people will remember me to be for this album. It is undoubtedly one of the most important in the history of Human Drama in addition to a very special one and one of the most beloved by both me and our followers.
