Amon Amarth has released "Upphaf," the first acoustic composition in the band's more than three-decade career. Issued through Metal Blade Records, the single was produced by Jacob Hansen and arrives alongside an official music video directed by Pavel Trebukhin, opening a new chapter before the band's upcoming studio album.
With "Upphaf," Amon Amarth temporarily steps away from the crushing intensity of melodic death metal to build an arrangement centered on acoustic instrumentation, layered vocal harmonies, and an atmosphere inspired by Scandinavian oral tradition. Instead of relying on the band's trademark riffs and relentless pace, the composition evokes the setting of a Viking longhouse, allowing its melodies and storytelling to take center stage.
Rather than signaling a permanent stylistic shift, the release serves as a standalone piece that introduces what comes before the band's next full-length record. According to the official statement, "Upphaf" strips Amon Amarth's songwriting down to its core, presenting the skeletal framework of the band's Norse-inspired narratives while preserving the identity that has defined its music for more than thirty years.
The single was once again produced by longtime collaborator Jacob Hansen, while the accompanying video was directed by Pavel Trebukhin, visually reinforcing the song's restrained and reflective character.
Formed in 1992 in Tumba, Sweden, Amon Amarth has become one of modern metal's most successful and recognizable bands. Throughout its career, the group has shared stages with Slayer, Guns N' Roses, Foo Fighters, and Pantera, while headlining major festivals and performing at landmark venues including The Forum in Los Angeles and Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado.
Among the band's recent milestones was its headline performance at Wacken Open Air 2024, where approximately 85,000 fans witnessed the set, as well as multiple appearances at Bloodstock, Download, and Summer Breeze, reinforcing Amon Amarth's standing among Europe's premier festival headliners.
The band has also developed a unique connection with its audience through traditions such as The Viking Row, which originated during Amon Amarth's performance at Bloodstock 2009 before spreading to concerts by other artists and eventually appearing at international sporting events. That audience tradition later inspired the band's 2022 single "Put Your Back Into The Oar."
While "Upphaf" reveals a more restrained side of Amon Amarth, the release also serves as the first step toward the band's next studio album. The group will continue its 2026 North American tour alongside Dethklok and Castle Rat as it enters its next creative cycle.
