Dave Lombardo and dark ambient pioneer Lustmord have joined forces under the name Lustmord Lombardo. Their debut album, The Pulse of Atoms, will be released on October 2, 2026, through Ipecac Recordings.
The pair introduced the project with “Paleomagnetic Resonance,” a first single that moves Lombardo’s percussion away from conventional metal structures and places it inside evolving walls of electronic sound.
The seven-track album is available to preorder digitally and on CD and vinyl. Two limited-edition vinyl variants, Clear and Smoke, are also available from the official release page.
“Paleomagnetic Resonance” reveals another side of Dave Lombardo
The first single establishes the language of Lustmord Lombardo. Rather than relying on riffs, verses or choruses, the composition develops through layers of sound that expand and collide with Lombardo’s drumming.
His percussion retains its familiar physical intensity but assumes a different role. The drums function as impacts within an evolving environment instead of providing the foundation for a traditional metal song.
Lustmord began the process by creating walls and vortices of sound, leaving room for Lombardo to add drums, percussion and several synthesizer layers. Once the recording was complete, Lustmord edited and arranged the material before mixing and mastering the album.
Lustmord and Lombardo first met backstage at a Fantômas concert after being introduced by mutual friend Buzz Osborne of Melvins.
The encounter took place around the period when Lustmord and Melvins created Pigs of the Roman Empire. Released by Ipecac Recordings in 2004, that album combined the band’s physical weight with Lustmord’s dark ambient sound design.
Nearly two decades later, the two musicians reconvened to develop a project of their own. Instead of forcing their respective identities into an established genre, they created music intended to exist outside any specific period or familiar musical language.
For Lustmord, the conceptual scale of the album reaches beyond human experience. It evokes dying planets, the formation of stars and the cycles surrounding the birth and destruction of the universe.
Lustmord reconnects with his industrial roots
Born Brian Williams, Lustmord emerged from the British industrial and experimental underground during the early 1980s. His work played an essential role in defining the vocabulary later associated with dark ambient.
His music uses low-frequency drones, field recordings and acoustic spaces as compositional elements. Instead of depending on conventional melody, it creates tension through depth, resonance, texture and gradual movement.
That approach has influenced experimental electronic music, cinematic sound design and the more atmospheric edges of metal. Lustmord’s catalog also includes collaborations with artists such as Melvins, Tool, Maynard James Keenan, Wes Borland, Karin Park and Chris & Cosey.
The Pulse of Atoms reconnects him with his industrial foundations while introducing the unpredictable presence of live drums. Lombardo can generate frantic momentum, but his instrument also functions as texture, vibration and a measure of scale inside Lustmord’s compositions.

The album includes two compositions divided into connected movements. “An Eternal Presence” opens the record with Unknown and Relentless, while “The Desolate Shore” moves between the descent of Submergence and the return suggested by Emergence.
