American punk rock band Green Day are expanding their creative reach with their upcoming film, now officially titled Nimrods. The project, previously known as New Years Rev, has been acquired by Inaugural Entertainment, which confirmed the title change as part of its global rollout strategy.
According to CEO Kevin Weisberg, the film blends humor, nostalgia and music, positioning it as a story designed to resonate with broad audiences. It is framed as a coming-of-age comedy rooted in rock culture and youth experience.
Directed by Lee Kirk, Nimrods stars Mason Thames, Mckenna Grace, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Sean Gunn, Bobby Lee and Fred Armisen. The plot follows three friends traveling to Los Angeles under the mistaken belief that their band will open for Green Day on New Year’s Eve, leading to a chaotic road trip across the country.
The narrative draws inspiration from real-life experiences tied to the band’s early years touring in a van, aiming to translate that culture into a fictional cinematic framework.
The film is backed by Live Nation Studios, with Head of Film & Television Ryan Kroft highlighting its focus on the relationship between Green Day and their fanbase, integrating music into a broader storytelling format.
Under its previous title, the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025, marking its initial public debut. Since then, the project has evolved in terms of distribution and positioning.
While a new release date has yet to be confirmed, Nimrods is shaping up as an extension of Green Day’s cultural universe, translating their influence into a narrative that blends fiction with autobiographical elements.
