New York death metal legends Immolation are preparing to unleash their twelfth studio album Descent, set for release on April 10 via Nuclear Blast. The release will coincide with the band’s upcoming North American tour alongside fellow labelmates Behemoth.
As a preview of the record, the band has released the new single “Attrition”, a track defined by crushing grooves and volatile rhythmic shifts. The song begins with a slow, suffocating tempo before evolving into complex time variations that culminate in a devastating finale.
The accompanying music video was directed by guitarist Bob Vigna, reinforcing the dark and cinematic tone of the band’s new material.
Speaking about the track, the band stated:
“We’re excited to release ‘Attrition’, another new track from our upcoming album Descent. This is a dark, powerful and intense song. ‘Attrition’ has a bleak and hopeless atmosphere… focusing on the senseless wars and territorial battles that humanity seems to repeat constantly, regardless of the cost.”
They also highlighted the contribution of drummer Steve Shalaty.
“Steve Shalaty’s drumming is a key element in this song, emphasizing the emotional intensity of the track, not only with a militaristic feel but with unique cymbal work and rhythmic twists that bring the musical sections to life.”
“‘Attrition’ is a great example of the diverse nature of Descent: a catchy yet explosive track with all the elements of Immolation. We hope you enjoy it!”
The album was recorded across two locations. Guitars, bass and vocals were tracked at Jpass Music with Justin Passamonte, while drums were recorded at Mercinary Studios with Noah Buchanan. Production was handled by the band alongside engineer Zack Ohren, who also mixed and mastered the album.
Visually, the band once again collaborated with renowned artist Eliran Kantor for the album artwork, complemented by booklet illustrations from Santiago Jaramillo of Triple Seis Design.
