Tarja Turunen continues unveiling new pieces from her upcoming studio album Frisson Noir with the release of “The Trace Outlives,” a dramatic and emotionally heavy single deeply inspired by Japanese culture and existential isolation.
The song appears on the former Nightwish vocalist’s upcoming album, scheduled for release on June 12, and once again showcases the cinematic and theatrical side that has defined much of Tarja’s solo career.
Musically, “The Trace Outlives” blends orchestral arrangements, dark atmospheres and Tarja’s unmistakable voice with the inclusion of the shamisen, a traditional Japanese string instrument known for its sharp, percussive tone and historical connection to Japanese theater. According to Tarja, the song was directly inspired by the Japanese phenomenon known as Johatsu, a term used for people who intentionally disappear from society and cut all ties with their previous lives.
“‘The Trace Outlives’ was inspired by the Japanese phenomenon of Johatsu,” Tarja explained. “I was looking for a sound that would take me to Japan and found a beautiful ancient instrument that resembles a guitar, but has a more percussive sound — the shamisen.” To help build that atmosphere, the singer invited Japanese musician Sayo Komada to contribute to the song.
