Guitarist and songwriter Ross The Boss Friedman, globally recognized for his role as a founding member of Manowar, has publicly announced that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease.
In a message shared with fans, Friedman explained that the diagnosis followed a period of medical evaluations and that, while the condition is serious, his determination and spirit remain strong. He emphasized the importance of being open and honest with those who have supported him throughout his career.
“I’ve been diagnosed with ALS. It’s not easy news to share, but I felt it was important to be straightforward with all of you,” Friedman stated.
Rather than signaling an immediate retirement, the guitarist made it clear that he intends to continue creating music and performing live for as long as his body allows, maintaining the connection to music that has defined his life.
“As long as I can play, I will play. Music is who I am, and I’m not giving up,” he added.
Ross “The Boss” played a crucial role in shaping the epic sound of American heavy metal in the 1980s, contributing to landmark albums that helped establish Manowar as one of the genre’s most influential bands. He later built a strong career with his own project, remaining a constant presence on stages worldwide.
The announcement has sparked an outpouring of support from fans, fellow musicians, and figures across the international metal scene, honoring both his musical legacy and his courage in openly sharing his diagnosis.
Friedman concluded by reaffirming that this new chapter does not define him, but rather represents another challenge he will face with the same intensity that has always fueled his music.
