La banda alemana Xandria, estuvo de visita en nuestro pais hace apenas unos dias, por lo que SUMMA Inferno aprovechó la ocasión para tener una plática con el guitarrista de la banda, Philip Restemeir sobre su opinión de México y el lanzamiento de su nuevo álbum de estudio, “Sacrificium”.
Bueno, están de regreso en México, al Multiforo Alicia, con una nueva cantante y un nuevo álbum próximo a salir…
Muchas cosas han cambiado desde nuestro primera -y única- visita en 2006, esta vez es nuestro primer show en México como cabeza de cartel, la impresión es todavía más grande. Nos sentimos muy confiados con nuestra alineación actual, la pasada no siempre era fácil y divertida, pero hoy en dia será mucho más divertido que nunca viajar con la pandilla. Y pues si, después de nuestra visita a México tendremos que regresar a terminar el trabajo de nuestro nuevo disco “Sacrificium” que será lanzado en Mayo.
Han definido a Dianne, -su nueva vocalista- como una “gloria del talento holandés”, ¿ha tenido problemas para adaptarse al estilo de la banda, sobre todo con el material viejo?
No podría hablar de problemas, cuando tienes la oportunidad de trabajar con alguien que es tan flexible y está dispuesta a todo por el bien de la banda.
Por supuesto, tienes que conocer a los demás y no todo encaja perfectamente en un inicio. Pero ella es muy talentosa y tiene un ancho repertorio en su variedad vocal. Estuve muy impresionado no solo por su voz, sino por su capacidad para trabajar duro y desde distintos enfoques.
Así que entonces, su nuevo álbum se llama “Sacrificium”, ¿Sigue la linea de sus lanzamientos anteriores?
Mira, si te gustó “Neverworld’s End” seguro te gustará “Sacrificium”. Creemos que nos las arreglamos para llevar nuestra idea de metal sinfónico todavía un paso mas adelante. El aspecto melódico sigue siendo muy fuerte, el sonido épico y sinfónico crea una enorme sensación cinematográfica y hay todavía mas partes que nos es divertido tocar como músicos y como metaleros.
Pero, ¿Podremos encontrar ese “Sonido Xandria” que ya reconocemos, en este nuevo disco?
Yo creo que la mayoría de las personas ya lo saben, que con nuestro último disco, redefinimos nuestro sonido.
Como ya dije, nos enfocamos en los fuertes elementos melódicos que tu conoces en Xandria desde los inicios. Pero ahora añadimos mas elementos sinfónicos y cinemáticos, además que nos volcamos más hacia el metal.
Estamos realmente felices con esto y sentismos que todavía nos falta mucho por descubrir.
Los cambios de vocalista, ¿han ayudado a definir la evolución en el estilo musical de Xandria?
Bueno, para nosotros los cambios en la alineación siempre nos parecian un retroceso. Es tan frustrante cuando algo que haz construido a lo largo de los años, simplemente se acaba y entonces tienes que volver a comenzar y convencer a la gente de nuevo de que somos una buena banda y que todo sigue encajando.
Yo estoy muy feliz con la alineación actual. Musicalmente y a nivel personal. Así que, al final, somos muy afortunados después de todo. Y esto nos ha ayudado a mostrar que somos una banda que puede sobreponerse a los tiempos duros en la industria.
Antes de su visita a México, se embarcaron en el 7000Tons of Metal. ¡Suena divertido! ¿Es tan divertido como suena?
¡Demonios, si! Desde que el barco partió de Miami hacia Costa Maya y de regreso, ya nos veiamos en México desde el crucero. Un lugar hermoso, con maravillosas playas y una historia impresionante.
El festival por si mismo es uno en su especie, de muchas maneras. Amo la idea, de mezclar a los artistas y los fans y relajarse juntos. No creo que los artistas deban tener miedo de esto. Nadie es molesto o un acosador. Tal vez funciona porque ves a los artistas en el festival actuando como gente normal y no como en un bar o en el show. Te sientes confiado tratando con ellos como gente normal. Y eso es lo que mas me gusta. A nadie le gusta conversar con alguien que te trata distinto a un humano. Por lo menos, no a mi…
México parece amar la música alemana. Y los músicos alemanes parecen amar a sus fans mexicanos…
Los fans mexicanos son simplemente fantásticos haciendote sentir bienvenido como banda. Siempre quieren fiesta y saben muy bien como hacerla. Y sobre el otro lado… Hay muchisima buena música en Alemania… Tal vez los músicos alemanes están haciendo crecer su buena reputación… lo cual no es lo peor por lo que un pais puede ser famoso.
Pero obviamente, el pais de origen no te da un sello de calidad, per se.
¿Y tú que opinas de sus fans mexicanos? Porque sus fans parecen quererlos bastante…
Siempre nos la pasamos muy bien. Ustedes son el tipo de audiencia a la que amo más, entusiasta y sin miedo de hablar conmigo de una manera normal.
Finalmente, ¿Quieres mandarles un mensaje?
¡Los amamos también! ¡Sigan siendo como son! ¡Asombrosos! Y estén atentos a nuestro nuevo disco, “Sacrificium” para volver a México a finales de este mismo año.

You’re coming back to Mexico to Multiforo Alicia, with a new singer and a new upcoming album…
Many things have changed since our first -and only- visit in 2006 and since the gig on this trip was our first headlining show,
this impression was even stronger. We feel very confident with the current line-up, the past wasn´t always easy and funny.
but nowadays its probably more fun than ever to travel with the gang!. After the Mexico-trip we go straight back to
do the final work on the new record “Sacrificium” that will be released in May.
You define Dianne’s voice like a glorious Dutch talent, did she had problems to adapt to the band style, overall the old songs?
I would not speak of problems, when you have the chance to work with somebody who is that flexible and willing to give the best for the band. Of course you have to get to know each other and not everything fits perfectly from the very beginning.
But she is very talented and has a broad variety of vocal sounds. I was very impressed not only by her vocals but also her ability to work hard and trying out different approaches.
So, your upcoming album is named “Sacrificium”. Follows the same line than your previous releases?
If you liked “Neverworld’s End” you will also like “Sacrificium”. We feel like we managed to take our idea of symphonic metal evenone step further. The melodic aspect is still very strong, the epic symphonic sounds create a huge cinematic atmosphere and there are even more parts that are fun for us to play as musicians and metalheads!
Will we find that “Xandria sound” that all we know in this new album?
I think most people already know that, in certain ways, we redefined Xandria with our last record.
Like I said, we kept focussing on strong melodic elements that you know from xandria from the very beginning.
But added more symphonic and moviescore-like elements and turned more towards metal.
We are really happy with this and feel like there is still a lot for us to discover…
This singer changes, help to define a musical and stylish evolution in the band?
Well, for us the line-up changes always were a throwback at first. It’s just so frustrating when a thing you build up over the last years is torn apart and you have to start over and convince people again that you are a good band and the pieces fit together.
Like I said before, I am very happy with the current line-up. Musically and also on a personal level. So, in the end, maybe we were lucky after all. And it definitely helps us to show, that we are a band that can also endure the harder times and situations in the music business.
Before your visit to our country you will trip 7000 tons of Metal ship. Sounds fun! Is so fun like it sounds?
Hell yeah! Since the ship went from Miami to Costa Maya and back, we got to see Mexico already during the cruise.
A beautiful place with lovely beaches and an impressive history.
The festival itself is one-of-a-kind in so many ways. I love the idea of fans and artists mixing in the festival crowd and it is really relaxed. I think no artist should be afraid of this. Nobody was annoying or stalking. Maybe it works because when you see artists at a festival acting like normal persons at a bar or a show, you feel confident in treating them like normal persons.
And this is what we like. Nobody wants to have a conversation with somebody who treats you like you are a different human being. At least not me…
México seems to love German music. German musicians seems to love Mexican fans, why?
The Mexican crowd is just fantastic in making you feel welcome as a band. They want to party and definitely know how to do it. And concerning the other way around… there’s a lot of good music from Germany…maybe German musicians build up a reputation… not the worst thing a country can be famous for.
But of course everybody knows, that the country of origin is not a sign of quality per se.
What’s your opinion about your Mexican crowd? Cause your Mexican fans loves you, really much.
We had a great time. This the kind of crowd i love the most. Enthusiastic and not too afraid to talk to us in a normal way.
