Illegal is a cult band in rock and punk from Spain with more than four decades of life. The natives of Asturias return to Mexico this December 8 with a solo date after their monumental presentation in the Vive Latino, and we were able to talk about it and many more topics with Jorge Martinez, vocalist and guitarist of the band.
Ilegales va para cuatro décadas de hacer rock que además ha sido un rock directo y hasta incómodo para muchas personas ¿Cuál es la fórmula para mantenerse vigentes tanto tiempo y además haciendo nueva música todo el tiempo?
Sin duda el entusiasmo y nuestro escaso sentido de lo ridículo, además de el tener un mensaje propio en el que creer. Con eso y un poco de técnica y habilidades musicales bueno, aquí está el resultado.
Hablando de lo musical, en algunas entrevistas has mencionado previamente que para este reciente trabajo "Rebellion", decidieron no permitir influencias al momento de la grabación y masterización. ¿Cómo fue entonces el proceso de producción de este trabajo?
On this occasion what we did was avoid all the complicated processes outside and leave this job as raw as possible, unlike many other jobs where many people are involved in the post-production process. We wanted to have that sound where you simply connect the instruments, position the microphones and hit it. That it seems the band is playing in there with you in your room, and that what you hear is our purest and crudest state.

Estamos muy contentos por su regreso a México y recordamos con mucha emoción su presentación en el Vive Latino. ¿Qué nos puedes contar al respecto?
El Vive Latino me encanta y esa fue nuestra primera experiencia en tan enorme festival. Me la pasé muy bien aunque fue también un problema porque hay un montón de bandas en un montón de escenarios; y entonces todo hay que hacerlo muy rápido y cronometrado; y con solo 40 minutos para tratar de hacer un setlist digno que resuma casi 40 años de recorrido. Lo aprovechamos al máximo y fue una gran oportunidad para nosotros pero ahora con este concierto en solitario viene la gran oportunidad también pero de regalar una noche vasta y que nos permita dar una experiencia completa de la trayectoria de Illegal. I am frankly very happy with this upcoming experience.
Me imagino entonces con esa enorme trayectoria se vuelve siempre complicado armar un setlist ya que al final tienes que dejar tal o cual canción que te gusta o consideras importante porque de no hacerlo el concierto sería eterno
I totally agree. We have almost 300 songs to play but we are definitely going to play less than 35 or 37 songs. We can do it because we have very fit musicians who can resist it. Our shows flow at full speed, very intense and with little rest between songs. It is a demanding experience up and down the stage and although in the end my heart ends up pumping hard to everything it gives, it is how we like to do things.
Centrándonos en los sencillos recientes de "Rebellion", al hablar de “Si no luchas te matas” y su video tan histórico así como la lírica que habla de lo común que ha sido a través del tiempo morir por cosas como la religión o el rey ¿Consideras estamos de cierto modo obligados a que la historia siempre esté escribiéndose con tinta de sangre?
Until now and since the earth rotates and even before humans, the species have always been in constant conflict seeking survival and supremacy. Now, another thing is that the tendency in the civilized world is that the countries look for wars specifically for economic reasons. Since the 1940s, the Balkans, etc., have been constant economic wars, and let's not talk about the United States that its natural state seems to be constantly seeking wars of this type.
In Mexico, for example, we know there is an internal war that has cost a lot of blood and, for many years, Spain was besieged by terrorism. We are an aggressive and surviving species, and that is how we are. Our song focuses on the Carlist hymn and this stupidity that "By God, the fatherland and the King our parents died; and for them we will also die ”. With this theme we express the opposite, we do not want to die for any of that and we want that history not to repeat itself because we are repugnant at the idea of dying for something like that.
Y en esa forma de actuar de Ilegales, su segundo sencillo da un giro completamente y habla de “Mi amigo Omar”, haciendo una clara referencia a la homosexualidad del personaje y que aun así es un hombre de mundo, a diferencia de muchos maricones que lo son sin tener forzosamente que ser individuos gay.
(Risas) Entiendo eso de hacer diferencia entre el maricón y el homosexual porque eres mexicano. Tengo amigos mexicanos y sé que pueden hacer esa diferencia de la manera en que tú la expresas. El tema se centra un poco en los derechos de los homosexuales que han sido pisoteados constantemente y hace apenas unos 30 años estaban privados de un montón de derechos. "My Friend Omar" entonces habla de un tipo que es homosexual pero es también una buena persona, y que se mueve con tal solvencia en su entorno que a todos les simpatiza sin importar su preferencia sexual.
It is common to form ghettos where homosexuals gather so as not to be disturbed. From my point of view ghettos should not exist and not only with homosexuals but with blacks, Latinos, those who profess another religion and even for rockers: history has taught us that segregating and dividing is not the solution and that People should be able to live with everyone and be tolerant of differences without being deprived of their rights. We give voice to that idea with a punk outburst that I must say, I really like.
Finalmente ¿Gustas dejar un mensaje para los fans en México que ya esperan verte en el Plaza Condesa?
I appreciate the space and for the Mexican fans who will be able to see us in a complete concert, we assure you that there will be songs from all the albums. We will choose themes from our first work in 1982 to the freshest and most current. The songs of Illegal they do not age and even those launched at the beginning are very valid. The one who grows old is me (laughs), but songs that we launched so long ago can be heard and lived with the freshness of when they were made.
