It's been a couple of years since Leave’s Eyes was seen in the eye of the hurricane after the surprise departure of its singer, Liv Kristine. La banda tuvo que que luchar contra la corriente – e incluso contra algunos de sus fans, quienes no estaban tan contentos con la noticia para salir a flote. Hoy, con un nuevo álbum en su haber y con una nueva cara al frente, estos vikingos se alistan para reconquistar el mundo, incluso esos que dudaron de ellos.
We were able to talk to the new singer of the band, Elina Siirala, Alexander Krull and the guitarist Thorsten’Tosso’ Bauer about the new album „Sign of the DragonheadLiv's stormy departure and the 2018 World Cup.
How complicated is it to take all these elements, metal, orchestral music, symphonic sounds, folk sounds and put them together with Viking elements and stories and then mix them together to create good music?
Alex: Por supuesto que una producción de gran nivel es algo muy demandante y siempre un gran reto. En una canción como “Waves of Euphoria” tuve que mezclar más de 300 tracks [risas]. Y la producción de „Sign of the Dragonhead“ es seguro la más grande y la mejor que hemos hecho hasta ahora. Oidos trabajar de nueva cuenta con extraordinarios artistas como la Orquesta Vocal de Londres, quienes han participado en un montón de películas gigantescas como ‘El Señor de los Anillos’ o ‘Star Wars’ , el ensamble de Victor Smolski de Minsk, además de varios extras musicales que nos dieron una variedad de solos de folk, percusión y música clásica. Me encanta poder trabajar con todas estas capas a la hora de crear un álbum de metal épico, igualmente la composición que me permite trabajar con nuevos conceptos para Leaves’ Eyes.
Tosso: Composing and producing an album by this band is always very complex and time consuming. Even though we record, compose and produce from our own studio. Basically we've been working on this monster album for two years.
Y a la hora de componer, llega un momento en que se preguntan “demonios, ¿cómo vamos a meter todo esto en un show en vivo?
Tosso: Live shows are something that helps us a lot when it comes to composing. Having already had many shows with Elina and playing together as a band gave us an advantage as well. We had a long tour of North America with Sonata Artica and Sabaton, so we took the energy from those shows and transferred it to the studio, when recording. So whenever I compose, I always have that energy in mind and imagine what the songs will sound like live, which adds even more power to them. The songs are the stars of each album and we always try to make them sound as great in the studio as live, massive and epic. It is one of the strengths of this band.
Y sí, creo que es un disco bastante épico… Supongo una parte importante es lo inmiscuidos que están en todo eso de la mitología nórdica.
Alex: Claro, nuestras letras están fuertemente conectadas con esa mitología en especial. Con todo lo nórdico, los temas medievales y las sagas vikingas. Desde quea bands comenzó, teníamos letras inspiradas en esos temas, pero también en cosas relacionadas con la naturaleza, los paisajes de la región y el océano. Estos elementos encajan a la perfección con el sonido de Leave’s Eyes y nos encanta retratas una imagen Epica con nuestra música. Por eso nos relacionamos con el Coro Vocal de Londres y toda esa gente que mencioné previamente, que además agregan cosas como harás, flautines y silbatos. Te juro que hacen sonar nuestro metal de una forma impresionante. ¡Deja tu vida diaria y adentrate al mundo de Leave’s Eyes! [risas] “Sign of the Dragonhead” comienza con el tema que le da nombre, y que está directamente conectado con el álbum “King of Kings”.
Vikings have always reached new horizons, just as we do with our band. The sagas tell us the story of King Harald Fairhair, his ship called "Draken" (dragon) and his warriors dressed as wolves, the Berserkers. However, "Sign of the Dragonhead" is not as such a concept album dealing with a single character. We have a huge variety of interesting themes to tell you on this new album. For example, the song "Völva" is about the life of women in the Viking age. Vikings believed that a Völva could perform pagan rituals and see the future, connect with the other world, and give important messages to the Jarls, the leaders of the Vikings.
Do you consider yourself a sort of Viking story teller of the modern age?
Alex: Bueno, ¡esa es una pregunta interesante! Y como soy parte de una recreación vikinga, creo encaja perfectamente conmigo [risas]. Por ejemplo, la canción “Jomsborg” es muy personal para mi. Es acerca de la legendaria fortaleza que lleva ese nombre y los Jomsvikings. Mi padre y su familia eran oriundos de esa región y para mi fue muy especial escribir una canción sobre ello. En estos días, hay una compañía de recreación vikinga llamada ‘Jombsborg’, es la más grande de todas y como te dije, soy parte de ella, incluso soy un miembro de honor. La canción también es una especie de homenaje todos esos actos de recreación alrededor del planeta. Cuanto tengo algo de tiempo y no estamos de gira, entreno para las batallas de los eventos vikingos y medievales y me uno a mis hermanos. El recrear la época es ser un apasionado de la historia y un estilo de vida.
Y no sólo es sobre las batallas – que claro, es lo que más llama la atención – sino todo, la vestimenta, los mercados, el hecho de acampar juntos y conocer otra gente con la misma pasión que yo. Además no ves celulares por ahí [risas]. La gente trata de reproducir la forma de cocinar y todo. La joyeria, los zapatos, las casas, los medios de transporte, la réplica de armas antiguas, todo combinado. Un respiro de toda esta vida moderna.
Ya pasaron dos años desde que Elina se unió a la banda, ¿’Sign of the Dragonhead’ es la culminación de todo el trabajo juntos?
Tosso: Ya en 2016 habíamos grabado un EP con ella, ‘Fires in the North’ que fue agotó dos veces y los fans lo amaron. Pero claro, el poder escribir canciones especialmente para la voz de Elina y para un álbum completo fue un nuevo hito para la banda. ‘Sign of the Dragonhead’ es la producción más grande en la que me haya visto envuelto y probablemente la mejor. Estamos felices y orgullosos de este álbum y de la hermosa voz que Elina puso ahí.
They are fans of making videos, is it because they allow them to integrate a new vision of their songs?
Elina: Absolutamente, el video es una herramienta poderosa para darle una nueva dimensión a la música y enriquecer la historia desde una perspectiva visual.’Sign of the Dragonhead’ fue el tema perfecto para hacer un video y traer la canción a la vida a través de las imágenes. Unir ambos mundos.
What is your favorite song from this new material?
Elina: Creo que… precisamente ‘Sign of the dragonhead’, me gusta que sea pesada y enérgica y además encaja perfectamente con mi voz [risas].
Tosso: A mi sinceramente me encanta el tono épico de ‘Waves of Euphoria’. Es un tema muy complejo y con enormes atmósferas auditivas, grandes ritmos e instrumentación. ¡La amo!
At first, fans were reluctant to accept Liv Kristine's departure and Elina's arrival, has this changed?
Tosso: After the mutual agreement and the official announcement of Liv's departure in April 2026, many fans were surprised and, of course, sad. Liv was the one who told us that he wanted to leave the band, so nothing happened behind his back as he falsely said later on the Internet. That was what caused the shower of shit and some trolls started making up stupid gossip and ridiculous rumors. But negativity can only be organized by hate groups and trolls for a few weeks. All the concerts we did with Elina, even from the first one, were amazing. With her we have played in individual shows and festivals throughout many countries, Indonesia with Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Switzerland, as well as a great American. Her first show was in Indonesia in front of 21,000 people, imagine! Wherever we play with her we have a fantastic response and fans always make her feel welcome with a big round of applause. Our fans have always been loyal. We even did three release concerts for this album and it entered the German charts at number 21. That's only possible with loyal fans.
Elina: I want to greatly thank all the people who have come to our concerts. They have been great shows that I have really enjoyed. Wherever we go, we have an impressive audience. I am very grateful for that.
How to deal with a change of this magnitude internally, with the other members of the band?
Tosso: Alex and I have always been the creative core and the base of the band, so I can say that the internal environment did not change much. An album like this, so great and with such an immense production are undeniable proof of this.
And how are the plans going with your other band, Atrocity?
Tosso: Atrocity apenas lanzó un EP llamado ‘Masters of Darkness’. Puedes considerarlo un vistazo brutal y oscuro del segundo disco de nuestra trilogía ‘Okkult’ ¡Créeme! Vienen canciones devastadoras en camino.
Alex: Nuestra trilogía “Okkult” combina nuestras raíces death metal con nuevas ideas musicales como épicos coros oscuros y elementos que crean atmósfera. ¡Un poquito como en las películas de terror clásicas! Amo todo el trasfondo lírico en esta trilogía. Todo es sobre los misterios oscuros del mundo. Con el nuevo EP „Masters of Darkness“ la banda regresa como un monstruo diabólico, como un presagio de ‘Okkult II’. El nuevo álbum será lanzado en en el verano de este año, así que estén preparados.
En los últimos años, Europa ha vivido una especie de “estado de alarma permanente” a causa del terrorismo que ha lastimado incluso a la música y los conciertos (como pasó a Eagles of Death Metal en Paris o Ariana Grande en Londres) ¿se han sentido inseguros en sus vidas desde esto?
Elina: It is very sad and deeply alarming that these types of attacks have become more frequent in recent years. I live in London, so I can tell you that I have seen these meaningless attacks with my own eyes recently.
However, I believe that we should not live in fear, because it does not lead to anything. It does not help or solve anything. We need to keep making music, playing and enjoying doing concerts, keep living normally!
Y bueno, ¿les gusta el fútbol? Ya viene el mundial. No va a estar Noruega, pero si estarán Alemania e Islandia – por primera vez…
Tosso: Alex and I are crazy about soccer! [laughs] Mexico plays Germany in the World Cup, right? [laughs] I loved the Iceland team during Euro 2016 and I will also support them now, even some of them play in the Bundesliga, so they are not strangers to us. And to Germany, of course! We will defend the title.
Alex: We can't wait for the World Cup to start! My son Leon and I went to many of the Die Mannschaft (German national team) tie games. We had to see a Germany vs Norway that was a great game. I guess we're all going to get together to watch the tournament in the studio or somewhere in the pubic summer.
