After more than two decades of career, it will finally be in December when Mexicans are fortunate to have for the first time in our country to Oomph!, the pioneering band of the Neue Deutsche Härte movement. It's more! We will be the first [and for now, the only ones] in the entire American continent to be able to presume that Dero Goi, Flux and Crap have played in their country, with the plus of the celebration of the 25 years of existence of the band.
With his new album ‘XXV’ under the arm, Oomph! platicó nuevamente con nosotros para invitarte a que los veas en el Circo Volador y te aseguran que será una experiencia que no olvidarás jamás… ¿para qué arriesgarse? Puede que no tengas otro chance.
Hi Dero! Thank you for giving us a few minutes for this interview.
Hello, the pleasure is mine!
I understand that this will be his first presentation in Mexico; Had they been to Latin America or the American Continent before, as tourists, perhaps?
Not; We had been in the United States, but not playing as a band, and that was many years ago.
What expectations do you have for this presentation?
The highest! We ALWAYS give everything we have in ALL of our presentations.
By the way, speaking of your submissions, how do you define your Setlist?
Well, with the tour of each album, we obviously include the singles to promote ...
… And now with a 25-year career, it is a wide and varied repertoire!
Precisely, we are doing concerts of almost 2 hours duration and sometimes I do force my voice a lot; I have a wide range to sing in high tones, low tones, but I also get crazy and scream a lot !, which is very, very exhausting for a tour as big as we are planning; if feasible, we would go for 5-hour concerts, but it is physically impossible!
Of course; That is something that fans appreciate a lot, when the Live Band sounds the same or better than the album.
It is a commitment that we have as a band; we have up to 9 people on stage doing their best to give the best sound to the audience; perhaps it would be easier to simply insert some samples or pre-recorded sound effects here and there, but I feel that the essence of what a live performance should be is lost.
Since your first live DVD (ROHSTOFF), have you planned to release a new one? There are many new songs to offer ...
Yes effectively! We have been collecting some recordings of some presentations; It is a project that I think we could build, when we give ourselves the time… Something we would like to try would be to assemble an acoustic set. It would be quite an interesting experience.
An acoustic set! It would be quite charming, with the themes that lend themselves to making these versions ... Have you also thought about including videos of your presentations at the Great Festivals that you have been taking part in recently? By the way, how has participating in these great events impacted you?
Yes, having been part of large festivals has been very exciting, although, obviously, they are lived very differently than when it is a show only by OOMPH !, where you have the entire audience on your side, when comparing it when you form part of an event where very varied shows or groups are presented for a very varied audience.
We are fascinated to feel the energy of the public live, as it happens with the unique shows of OOMPH !.
In recent years, Mexico has been host to world-class festivals; Would you consider participating in one?
Of course! Although what happens is that it is not exclusively up to us as a band to go out and play in other countries; It is necessary for a local promoter to be interested in taking the Band to its events, whether in Mexico, Brazil, or Argentina; so many countries that we would like to experience; but as I say "never say never".
We have seen videos of their performances in distant places like Russia and Ukraine, and we see that they really connect with their audience ...
That's right, we consider ourselves very lucky for that.
Do you have references, or have you been told about the intensity of the Mexican public?
Yes; they have told us that they are very euphoric; we really like that. The public infects us with their energy and enthusiasm, it is a very good feedback, which we are eager to experience.
Now that you are more exposed to diverse audiences around the world, do you find these experiences useful as sources of inspiration? Would you like to incorporate new rhythms into your compositions?
Definitely, we have verified the saying of "travel illustrates"; Being exposed to new cultures, foods, types of music, definitely have an impact on your life; I firmly believe that people who do not travel, who do not communicate with people from different cultures, are the ones who tend to be more judgmental.
Precisely, on your Facebook page you usually have a lot of interaction with the fans of the band and the general public that is interested in the topics you propose; Does that inspire you too?
Yes, it is a very interesting experiment, on my page [@TheRealDeroGoi] we deal with very diverse topics and the discussion that takes place, seeing the different points of view of very diverse people, is very stimulating for me; Sometimes they blow my head off!
That is a positive aspect of social networks, they can help you expand your vision on many topics, and be able to know what people who live things very different from what you are used to think.
The fact that the Band is celebrating 25 years, without changing its members, is a great achievement. How are you celebrating this anniversary?
Well, working! We have found a very good rhythm among the members in addition to the people with whom we collaborate for the tours, this atmosphere of cordiality so good is the one that encourages us to continue working and face, thus, together, the problems that arise.
It is very important that in addition to continuing to enjoy and also learning new things, we also feel that we are developing as human beings.
The evolution of the group is evident when comparing their record productions; Are you comfortable with the way the OOMPH! Has it changed over the years?
Yes, because what distinguishes this evolution in sound is directly related to our evolution as people; not just as artists or musicians; evolution is a constant in the Universe; keeping doing the same thing over and over would be very boring for us; exploring new things, experiencing changes is what keeps you on the road, the death of art is repetition!
Sure, even if there is some part of the fans waiting for all the albums to sound like OOMPH! mid to late 90s or so like that ...
No one can afford to be left with a "unique" sound; Maybe only AC / DC! Honestly, I think there are only 2 reasons why you could resist change: fear of the new or commercial reasons.
In Mexico, and also in several Latin American countries, the genre has been quite popular Neue Deutsche Härte, of which you are THE reference BAND; Did you know this?
It is something that makes us very happy, being part of a movement that has crossed borders and that people of different ages like too! Bands like RAMMSTEIN have potentiated this genre and achieved great world fame, but now they will have the opportunity to enjoy it with the originals!
Now that our allotted time is up, we just want to thank you for this interview, and we are very much looking forward to living the OOPMH experience! live next December.
Equally, we are genuinely excited to be playing for you, "VIVA LA MÉXICO!"
