A few months ago, the philanish band HIM announced the departure of his drummer Mika Kristian Karppine [better known as Gas Lipstick] after almost two decades with the group. His replacement would be found a couple of months later in a young -but not so much- drummer from northern Finland named Jukka Kröger -or Kosmo, pa'los cuates- with whom we had the opportunity to talk about joining one of the most important bands in Finland, a bit about the next album by HIM and of course, the return of Ville Valo and company to Mexico in December for the Knotfest Mexico 2015.

Hello Kosmo. How is life going on?
Hello Mexico and Summa Inferno! All good thanks. On a little vacation back home in Finland before heading back to the tour and stuff.
Tell me, how did your passion for being a drummer start?
I was about 12 years old when I really started playing, first I was a bass player because I loved the way Cliff Burton played from Metallica, it was great! But a year later, I got my first guitar and drums.
Hay dos cosas que recuerdo que me inspiraron a tocar la batería: En primera, cuando era bajista -por ahí de 1993- tenía un amigo en mi primera banda llamado Jani Soikkelo. Cuando tuvimos nuestros primeros ensayos en el garage de nuestro guitarrista y Jani comenzó a tocar, me quedé como de “¡Woowww!” ¿Cómo alguien puede tocar de manera tan genial con solo unos tambores y teniendo 12 años? [risas]. Luego, el segundo motivo que recuerdo era esa banda llamada Ferox, que tocaba en mi vecinadario y hacían una especia de Speed / Thrash Metal y su baterista, que se llama Zeba tenía esta batería enorme y asombrosa, una Tama Lars Ulrich de color blanco con doble bombo y un millon de toms y les pegaba como loco… ¡No lo podía creer! En ese entonces me encantaba el material de bandas como Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament, Iron Maiden, Stone, Nirvana y después algo de Death y toda la escena del Death Metal y Black Metal como Emperor, Satyricon, Cradle of Filth, Marduk etc. y un poco de Jazz/Groove de mi etapa en el conservatorio. Todos esos bateristas, músicos y maestros fueron los que me encaminaron.
Para la gente que todavía no te conoce, cuéntanos un poco de tu carrera musical…
After many years in various bands between 1993 and 1998, I founded a band called FM2000 in 1999. I played in that band for almost 11 years and made many albums, live performances, and tours. I had to part with them because I didn't have enough time to spend it with the band and I had to focus on one band at the same time as a drummer.
Then in 2007 I started playing with Herra Ylppö and Ihmiset, with whom I made 4 complete albums and 4 tours in Finland between that year and 2014. I have also played in VIHA [2004], Split Cranium -from 2010 to this year- and He was as a guitarist in a band called Verine [1999] and in Maple Cross [2010]
Comencé a estudiar música -en una escuela- en 2001 en una ciudad llamada Savonlinna y después entre al Conservatorio Palmgren en Pori. Tras 2 años ahí, tuvo la oportunidad de cambiarme al Conservatorio Jyväskylä’s Pop/Jazz en 2004 y me gradué en el 2007, como todo un músico / baterista Pop / Jazz.
You in Finland have a special taste for Metal, why?
I believe it is caused by these long, dark winters and that we have so little summer time. You couldn't survive here if you didn't listen to a little heavy music [laughs]. I also think that it is part of the mental state of every Finn, somewhat melancholic, of course with their respective expectations.
After going all that way through music, you are now part of one of the most important bands in your country, how was your incorporation to HIM?
¡Uy! Es una larga historia… pero te cuento la versión corta. Todo el crédito va para mis compañeros Herra Ylppö y Janne Joutsenniemi quienes son amigos de los miembros de HIM y ellos me elogiaron frente a Ville Valo y Burton y dijeron que yo estaba muy interesado -y disponible- en formar parte de la banda. Fue en Marzo pasado cuando Ville me mandó un mensaje preguntandome si seguía interesado en el puesto, y yo solo conteste: “¡Por supuesto que lo estoy!”
Luego me encontré con Ville y Mige -Amour, el bajista- en un bar de Helsinki, nos sentamos y platicamos. Fue una especie de “primera cita”. Me dieron 10 canciones que tenía que practicar y me dijeron “Veamos que tal te sale”. Los primeros ensayos oficiales fueron y Abril y bueno, ¡aquí estamos! Todo salió bastante bien.
Your joining the band was basically as a replacement for Gas [Mika Kristian Karppinen]. How complicated was that situation?
Bueno, más que nada fue algo raro, pues Gas estuvo en la banda por 16 años o algo así y todo los chicos se conocen desde que eran unos pequeños niños en Helsinki, y después de todos esos discos, giras, el éxito… llega este chico del norte -de Finlandia- del medio de la nada a tocar con ellos. ¡Pero hasta ahora todo ha salido bien! En los primeros ensayos y encuentros todos hicimos click in a very natural way and all the chemistry was as if we had played together forever. Truly amazing!
It is quite a challenge to play another drummer's material and try to add something that is yours and that is heard well. In this case, I have to respect and learn everything Gas and Pätkä left me with their very particular styles, since it is a big part of music. But it doesn't matter, because I like challenges.
How did HIM fans receive you?
¡Oh, los fans son grandiosos! He tenido un recibimiento increíble. Quisiera aprovechar para agradecerle a todos y cada uno de ellos por todo, por los regalos, los dibujos, los mensajes, las bienvenidas… por todo. Realmente no tengo palabras, me siento muy honrado. Ya sabía que había muchísimos fans de HIM alrededor del mundo, pero la verdad no esperaba algo tan enorme.
Después de mi anuncio oficial, Gas me puso en Facebook: “Te voy a ‘heredar’ a los mejores fans del universo, disfrutalos.” lo cual fue algo muy bueno de su parte. Él tiene un gran corazón y es una gran persona y además ¡mira! tenía toda la razón.
The band will start recording their new material very soon, are you ready to participate in the composition and arrangements of this new album?
Yes of course! Ville is the leader, genius, and exquisite songwriter who creates the songs, but ultimately HIM is a band that plays and sweats during rehearsals or in the studio and decides which songs will end up and how they will sound, as a group. United.
What do you think you can contribute with your unique style to the new HIM album and its sound from now on?
I think I'll try to give the drums a heavier style, all my spirit, some exquisite twists and a bit of Groove sound. Fill the sound of each member of the band to create great music and that all the records we make, have no limits.
Y bueno, tú y HIM vendrán a nuestro país en Diciembre para participar en la primera edición del Knotfest México…
¡Si! Y te prometo que será explosivo. Ya me dijeron que la audiencia se pondrá loca y gritará como en el mismísimo infierno. Es mi primera vez en México y en sudamérica y creo que me irá muy bien. ¡Ya no puedo esperar! Ahí nos vemos…
Then it will be your first time in Mexico, huh. What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of our country?
Oh, pues… ¡Cerveza, comida picante, calor, el sol, sombreros, guitarras acústicas, Frida Kahlo, el Día de los muertos y el futból!
Changing the subject, is it harder to live like music these days? What do you think of platforms like Spotify or the recent Apple Music?
Depende… es más difícil de lo que ya de por si era. Para las bandas underground es más difícil conseguir dinero, pero con toda la onda de las redes sociales es más fácil darse a conocer. Yo tengo una cuenta de Spotify y creo que es genial el tener cualquier tipo de disco, de cualquier tipo de género y encontrar un montón de nueva música que jamás había escuchado antes.
But of course, the money they pay us to have our music on their platforms is insignificant. In my case, I am at a point where I don't need them to live and that gives me great pleasure and makes me feel good. One of my dreams came true! [laughs] Everyone should follow their dreams and make them come true and this one-time thing we call life.
