Wardruna announces new studio album, ‘Birna’

One of the modern giants of the Nordic folk movement, Wardruna, have announced the release of their sixth studio album, ‘Birna‘ which will be available from January 24th via Sony Music/By Norse Music.

The first promo cut is titled ‘Himinndotter‘ and you can watch the official video below. The clip was shot in Norway’s Rondane National Park and is the work of director Tuukka Koski.

“Himinndotter” (The Daughter of Heaven) is part of a six-song exploration of the bear on our upcoming album, Birna (The She-Bear),” says Einar Selvik. “The title plays on the globally common notion of the mythical origin of bears as celestial beings. “Himinndotter” also features a special guest appearance by Norwegian choir Koret Artemis.”

‘Birna’ was written and recorded over a three-year period with music by Selvik and long-time collaborator, vocalist Linda-Fay Hella, and lyrics written solely by Selvik. Performers on the album, in addition to Hella and Selvik, include Eilif Gundersen, HC Dalgaard, Sondre Veland, John Stenersen and Arne Sandvoll.

Wardruna will simultaneously release ‘Live at the Acropolis’ on DVD/Blu-Ray. The tape, which includes a September 2023 performance at the Acropolis in Athens, includes the full concert, plus additional interviews and behind-the-scenes footage.
