Helvete, the legendary Euronymous store, catches fire

Neseblod Records, formerly known as Helvete, the iconic record store opened by Øystein 'Euronymous' Aarseth, creator of Mayhem and considered one of the most important points in the early history of Black Metal, was consumed by fire last night.

It is still not known for sure what caused the fire, but it is known that it started in the basement, a legendary place for lovers of the genre as it was a meeting place for the most emblematic figures of the Norwegian black metal movement at the beginning of the 90s.

The current owner of the store, Grethe Neseblod, has said that numerous historical items such as recordings, David Bowie clothing and a microphone used by Iggy Pop were lost.

“We hope we can save as much as possible, which is not covered in soot. We'll see if it works that way, if not, we wouldn't be able to continue with the store under the concept we had managed,” Neseblod said. “Many people visit us because of the collection of objects we had here, because it is not just a store but a window to the musical history of Norway.”

While police investigate the origin of the fire, a GoFundMe campaign has been started to help the store continue its activities. You can donate, here.
