PUP – ‘Morbid Stuff’

PUP – ‘Morbid Stuff’

Punk Rock from Toronto, Ontario, who since 2010 have been active and each day their entourage of fans is growing (just look at the number of dates of their current and extensive tour and how many are already Sold Out) and managing to penetrate the minds and People's taste, with strong, concise, hard, catchy songs and with which you can feel identified in some way or another, and they have the uniqueness of accompanying many of them with visual materials that are usually emotional, fun, witty and powerful , some connected to each other, in short, it is advisable to check their videography (in addition to their discography, of course).

Their debut and self-titled album was released in October 2013, followed by "The Dream is Over" in May 2016, and it was today April 5, 2019 when the band's third full-length material was released, titled "Morbid Stuff ”, recorded, produced and mixed by Dave Schiffman, who has worked with bands like Weezer and The Mars Volta, to name a few, and is the band's first material released under the“ Little Dipper ”label.

PUP presents Morbid Stuff, which is advertised as an album that evokes fury and celebration, and it is easy to get the idea by knowing the path, wear and labor it took to materialize this album, the harsh depression that Stefan went through Babcock, lead singer of the band, and who was somehow reflected in the rest of the band, but after the battle, the victory appeared in the form of a third and solid album. 11 tracks are the ones presented to us in this one, in which some consider the best PUP material to date, and I think I can also join this thought.

The song that opens the album is the one that gives it its name, Morbid Stuff, and it comes with melodic and powerful riffs, which announce that a completely pleasant sonic experience is beginning, in which we will gradually go deeper.

The second track is Kids, the first single they released prior to the full release of the album, along with a video that gives continuity to "Guilt Trip" and "Sleep in the Heat", completing a third of quite good videos that unite their three record materials.

In Babcock's own words: “Kids is a love song, from one depressing nihilist to another. It's about what happens when you bump into the only other person on the face of this desolate, godless planet who thinks everything is as twisted and screwed up as you are. And because of that, the world is starting to look a little less gloomy, but just a little bit, to be honest, it's still pretty screwed up. ”

Then comes Free At Last, the second single from the album, which also has an official video, produced more precariously but which manages to have its charm, due to the dynamics made between the band and the fans to bring it to life. It is an energetic subject that manages to kick heads. "Just cause you're sad again, it doesn't make you special at all"

Continue See You at Your Funeral, a topic about changing habits after someone's separation, and how we are left with questions about what has become of the life of the other and the feeling or desire to see that person again, although perhaps not be the best.

After a track on somewhat literal questions, the way to a song was opened, which as it is mentioned in a part of it, could be about dark thoughts that become somewhat charming, it is about Scorpion Hill, which personally, It turned out to be one of my favorite songs on the album, it is strong and deep, maybe it reflects a lot of that depression mentioned at the beginning, maybe it is not literal, but there is something behind that letter. Before
Knowing the tracklist, this song seemed perfect to me to close the album, it has that melody that causes me to be chanted by countless voices in unison.

The journey continues with Closure a theme in which he expresses the need to end certain things / relationships / situations, so far, the line continues on emotional aspects and somewhat personal situations.

With the theme Bloody Mary, Kate and Ashley comes the part that evokes the memories and children's games that terrified but filled us with restlessness to try, play and even suggest.

Sibling Rivalry is also one of the songs released prematurely, relates the brother / sister relationship, the things that can be annoying each other at times that are usually already a tradition, that you try to bear and that despite all that makes noise in coexistence, you still want to be there and with that person.

Full Blown Meltdown is a loud, loud and euphoric song, the one that cannot be missed in a PUP album, fast and with heartbreaking voices, but when Bare Hands follows it, it calms us a bit with a more melodic sound, and directs us directly to the closing of the album, with City, the only relaxed track of the Morbid Stuff, and which has a style very different from the rest of the band's work, and is the theme that marks a personal farewell and an attempt to part with what poisons the
soul, it turns out to be emotional and perhaps it was a success to finish the album with this song and thus manage to leave a good taste in your mouth and above all, without a doubt, manage to remove things from the audience, since it is sure that more than one of them has felt identified with more than one of the songs on this new album.
