Legendary thrash metal giants Megadeth will draw the curtain on their career with a final studio album and global farewell tour in 2026. Frontman Dave Mustaine revealed that persistent physical ailments are the decisive reason behind ending the band after more than 40 years.
Mustaine detailed long-standing health struggles — arthritis, bulging discs, a lumbar fracture and past spine and neck surgeries — all of which have compromised his ability to perform with the intensity Megadeth demands. At 64 years old, he admitted his hands “were letting him down,” and even though the final album is complete, he no longer feels capable of delivering shows at the level fans expect.
He emphasized that this decision was taken to preserve the dignity and artistic integrity of Megadeth. Following discussions with his family and current bandmates, they agreed to conclude the band's journey honorably. The upcoming self-titled album and the “This Was Our Life” tour will mark the end of an era.
Mustaine also ruled out a full reunion of past Megadeth lineups. While he respects former members, he cited past behaviors as obstacles, preferring the farewell to be carried out only by the current lineup — a decision rooted in fairness to all involved.
