Insect Ark, the Berlin duo formed by Dana Schechter and Tim Wyskida, have shared a second single from their upcoming album, Raw Blood Singing (7 June, Debemur Morti Productions). The song is called 'The Frozen Lake' and you can listen to it below.
“‘The Frozen Lake’ is kind of a sickly romantic fairy tale,” explains Schechter. “It takes place during the winter, hidden deep in the forest. The song is, in essence, a murder ballad: the heartbroken protagonist, rejected by her lover, tells a sordid story of sacrificing her by her hand. It doesn't end well for him, but from this release, they are both free.”
Wyskida shares how the seven-and-a-half-minute song came about: “When Dana and I started working on songs for the new album, he played me recordings of various ideas. Nowadays, I rarely hear a riff that gets me flowing. Dana had a great lap steel guitar riff. I had a different idea: to use fast cymbal bell patterns with bass drum hits, which sound like distant seismic events. I've always liked pieces of music that shift suddenly and dramatically between discretely related environments. In ‘The Frozen Lake,’ divergent environments collide.”
