The estate and family of late STATIC-X frontman Wayne Static have issued a cease and desist order against filmmaker Matt Zane following the announcement of an unauthorized documentary focused on Wayne Static and his wife, Tera Wray. The family stated clearly that they do not support or approve any biographical project developed without their consent.
The legal action came shortly after the estate publicly expressed its strong objection to the documentary, emphasizing its intent to protect the artist’s legacy and prevent unapproved productions. The statement reaffirmed that no unauthorized biography or film about Wayne Static has the family’s backing.
Despite the legal notice, Matt Zane has taken a firm stance, stating that the order will not stop the project. He has indicated his willingness to pursue the documentary to completion, even if the dispute escalates into a court case. Zane maintains that the film will ultimately be released.
Zane also questioned why his project has been targeted when several unauthorized documentaries about Wayne Static already circulate online. He defended his long-standing personal and professional relationship with Wayne Static and Tera Wray, suggesting that much of the backlash stems from a lack of understanding of that history.
The dispute has sparked intense debate within the metal community. As the estate seeks to safeguard Wayne Static’s legacy under its own terms, Zane insists his work is meant to honor a close friend and present an untold perspective. With both sides holding firm, the situation appears far from resolved and may become a defining case about artistic legacy and creative control.
