En tiempos donde las llamadas “superbandas” son pan de cada día, llega Sinsaenum, a project that was born from the mind of the Dragonforce bassist, Frederic Leclercq, who together with his group of friends -among whom we can name the drummer Joey Jordison, ex-Slipknot and the singer of Mayhem, Attila Csihar. Do you make them ugly? I don't think so, really.
The band released their first album, ‘Echos of the Tortured’ a little over two months ago, so we took the opportunity to talk a little about the good Fred about the formation of the band and the future that lies ahead.
Después de 7 años de intenso trabajo, por fin podemos escuchar ‘Echos of the Tortured’. ¿Cómo desarrollaste este proyecto?
Los últimos tres años fueron mucho más intensos, pero los otros 4 fueron más para recopilar ideas y darme cuenta que era lo que que buscaba realizar y con quien. Siempre amé el death y el black metal y siempre supe que un día, terminaría tocando mi instrumento principal, la guitarra, en una banda de death. Así que comencé a escribir canciones, hace muchos muchos meses. Lo demás fue fácil. Le dije a mis amigos, me dijeron que sí y aquí estamos…
What do you want to transmit with Sinsaenum's music?
Es una expresión de mi lado oscuro, de todos esos sentimientos negativos que tengo dentro de mi. Más que intentar transmitir algo, estoy tratando de deshacerme de ellos. Es una especie de catarsis, en la que yo necesito esta clase de música para expresar mi tristeza, mi enojo, el odio, ansiedad, violencia… es muy oscuro, sí.
Sometimes teamwork becomes complicated, how is the atmosphere inside Sinsaenum with so many metal stars?
I swear to you that there have never been any ego problems or any kind of drama within the band, because as I told you, we are all friends and we believe that we need to express the same thing, so it was easy for us. We all have an opinion and a right to vote within the gang, even if, as Attila says, I am the captain of the ship. [laughs]
How did you choose the members that would make up this project?
I chose people with whom I had a strong connection, and everything went naturally, almost as if everything was happening at the right time, in the right place. Sometimes we say that Sinsaenum is a force and all of us are only puppets, but it is only to explain how everything happened in such an unforced way. I have known all the boys for a long time, I admire them as artists and musicians. But that was the core point: I wanted people with whom I felt connected.
A veces se piensa que como ustedes ya son famosos, sería mucho más fácil lanzar un nuevo proyecto…
Bueno, como ya dije, todo ha estado pasando de forma muy fluida. Comenzamos a grabar sin tener disquera ni nada, pero encontramos una poco después… O sea, somos músicos establecidos, hemos estado en el negocio por mucho tiempo, así que sabemos a quien contactar. Pero también sabemos que se debe trabajar duro para presentarle al público algo bueno. La gente no quiere trabajar contigo solamente por el mero nombre. Así que sí, tenemos los contactos correctos, es verdad, pero también hemos trabajado tan duro como cualquier otra banda. De verdad, muy duro y mucho. He invertido mucho tiempo y sigo invirtiendo muchas horas en Sinsaenum. Y me gusta.
¿Por qué escoger el nombre ‘Echos of the Tortured’ para su disco debut?
La canción que lleva ese nombre es mi favorita, es un libro y tengo la portada tatuada en mi brazo. Así que, bueno, tiene cierto sentido. Además es una buena manera de describir el álbum, pues cada canción te deja un eco… quiero que la gente “viaje” sola y cree su propia historia detrás de cada una. No diré mucho más. Solo que la portada del disco expresa eso, los ecos de los torturados flotando y fusionandose en una sola entidad de caos que bien podría representar a Sinsaenum.
I guess they have plans to go on tour!
Eso será un tanto complicado pues todos estamos muy ocupados con nuestras otras bandas. Así que por ahora no tenemos fechas programadas… No nos podemos ir de gira si uno de los miembros falta y ese es un punto que quiero dejar bien en claro. Somos los 6 o nada. Así que la gente tendrá que ser paciente, así como lo hemos sido nosotros.
We can't let go that his fans have started comparing Sinsaenum with his other bands and previous works, is that something that bothers you?
No, para nada, está bien. Pero hasta donde yo creo, es como intentar comparar a la paella con un helado. Ambos son comida, pero son totalmente distintos. ¿Por qué -por ejemplo- tratar de comparar a Sinsaenum con Dragonforce? aparte de que yo escribí toda la música y la mitad de las letras, no hay otro punto de comparación. Pero claro, la gente se la pasa diciendo, “Esto es mejor o peor que Slipknot”, “Prefiero a Attila en Mayhem”, bla, bla, bla… Es algo normal, no me molesta.
What was the process like to find the perfect inspiration to write the songs?
Todo fue muy espiritual. Pensé, “¿qué está mal conmigo?” y traté de traspasarlo a la música. Musicalmente hablando, todo me inspiró. Obviamente, el black y el death son la base de todo, pero también la música clásica, el jazz, heavy metal, thrash… los soundtracks de películas de horror son muy buenos para esto, también.
How would you describe the album as a whole?
Personally, it is an achievement. I put all my heart and soul into this record. But if I have to describe it for the fans, I could say that it is very brutal, with small interludes that create a journey between themselves, a small story that everyone can create inside their own mind, sitting and listening to it from beginning to end.
