There was an apocalyptic quality to the (music of) 'Man Alive', and the idea developed lyrically from there: the setting for this event that took place and they all died, and you get this image of 'all the great creatures and Little girls grazed on blood red soil and grass that grows on city streets. So it is a post-humanity setting. And suddenly something washes up on the beach, and it turns out to be a man, and he's the only man alive, but he's just a man, so ... That's the end of humanity, because what good is a man? That was the idea. If it were a painting, you would call it an impressionist. "
