Four decades into a career defined by creative independence, Darkthrone has announced Pre-Historic Metal, set for release on May 8. The album blends elements of their past while continuing their sonic evolution.
While not strictly a black metal record, it stands as one of their closest returns to that sound in recent years. Fenriz described the concept as using old styles to create something new, emphasizing a raw yet refined approach.
The album features a more collaborative studio process and a tighter structure, focusing on eight riff-driven tracks rather than expansive atmospheres.
Recorded in Oslo and mastered by industry veterans, the record maintains the band’s signature rawness. As expected, no touring plans accompany the release, reinforcing Darkthrone’s long-standing approach to remain outside traditional industry cycles.
Despite the release, Darkthrone maintains its well-known stance of not touring, reinforcing its status as one of the most influential and enigmatic bands within extreme metal, with a career built far from commercial standards.
