Dutch symphonic black metal storytellers Carach Angren return to their roots with The Cult of Kariba, a concept EP that dives deeper into the legend that first defined their identity. Revisiting the tale of the White Lady of Schinveld, the band introduces a new sinister figure: Kariba, remembered in obscure folklore as both a poisoner and a witch.
Blending forgotten poetry, lost plays, and occult imagery, the narrative follows a secret cult determined to resurrect Kariba. The story unfolds across five tracks: “A Malevolent Force Stirs” sets the ritual in motion; “Draw Blood” unveils the first sacrifice; “The Resurrection of Kariba” reveals both her tragic past and the ceremony to bring her back; “Ik Kom Uit Het Graf” gives voice to vengeance from the grave; and “Venomous 1666” concludes with her spirit reborn, sealing the fate of those who summoned her.
Formed in 2003 in Limburg, Netherlands, Clemens “Ardek” Wijers and Dennis “Seregor” Droomers forged a unique blend of symphonic arrangements and black metal aggression, merging the grandeur of film scores with haunting storytelling. From their debut Lammendam (2008), inspired by the White Lady, to Death Came Through a Phantom Ship (2010) and Franckensteina Strataemontanus (2020), Carach Angren have consistently transformed legends and history into immersive horror tales.
With The Cult of Kariba, the band not only revisits the haunted forests of Schinveld but expands their mythos with darker tones and new layers of historical context. It’s a five-part descent into myth, fear, and vengeance—delivered with the cinematic precision that defines Carach Angren’s legacy.
