Therion es actualmente, una de las bandas suecas más importantes a nivel mundial. Tras la salida de su soprano Lori Lewis después de su gira por Latinoamérica hace apenas unos meses, la cantante de Opera croata Sandra Laureano ha llegado a tomar su lugar y deleitar a los fans de los nórdicos con su voz.
Eres de Croacia y originalmente eres una cantante de Opera. ¿Cómo es que te viste inmiscuida en bandas y proyectos de Metal?
Bueno, además de la Opera, siempre me gusta el Metal, así que quise participar en ambos géneros. Después de hacer música clásica, el metal parece ser un poco más fácil y me da más libertad.
¿Cuales son tus influencias musicales -dentro o fuera del Metal-?
Vocalmente siempre fue influenciada por las cantantes de Opera, como Renata Tebaldi, Jessye Normal, Brigitte Nielsen, Joan Sutherland y muchos otros. Pero también me gustan muchisimos vocalistas del Metal, pero solo disfruto escucharlos, es una forma de cantar muy distinta, así que no influyen en mi [en ese aspecto].
Y bueno, ¿cómo terminaste metida en Therion? Dime, ¿no sientes presión de se la persona que sustituye a Lori Lewis?
Mina, quien es una buena amiga mia y novia de Christofer [Johnsson, fundador de Therion] me sugirió como cantante, así que comenzamos a trabajar juntos. Lo más difícil fue el primer ensayo. La banda acababa de regresar de su gira por Latinoamérica, así que estaban muy cansados. ¡No sé de donde sacaron fuerzas y tocar tan bien!, y poco a poco fui agarrando su forma de ensayar y empecé a cantar con ellos. Para el segundo ensayo ya sonábamos como una banda que había tocado juntos por años.
En la grabación del ‘Rock Opera’ puedes escuchar tanto a Lori como a mi cantando las partes de Soprano, ¡es bastante genial! En los shows interpretamos canciones de varios discos, todos grabados con sopranos diferentes, así que no siento nada de presión, solamente canto con mi voz única. Es muy fácil cantar con cantantes tan buenos como Thomas y Linnea, con el apoyo de poderosas guitarras, orquestaciones, bajos y la batería.
Therion es una de las bandas más famosas y reconocidas a nivel mundial, ¿qué significa esto para tu carrera como cantante??
Significa un montón de emociones positivas, música hermosa, grandes shows y -algo que no tienes en la música clásica- la gran marea de gente cantando a tu lado.
¿Abandonarás tus otros proyectos? [Ken Zuruck y Thunderstorm]?
No los dejaré, pero en este momento tanto yo como los demás miembros de ambas bandas estamos demasado ocupados como para trabajar en ellos. Tal vez tengamos más tiempo para eso en el futuro.
Después de varios shows con Therion, ¿Cómo haz sentido la reacción del público y tus compañeros de banda?
¡Las reacciones han sido muy positivas! Amo la manera en que se organizan los festivales. En todos los que hemos actuado recientemente hacia mucho frio, ¡pero los fans fueron tan frescos y activos! ¡Tuve unos momentos maravillosos!
Por ahora, tu colaboración con Christofer Johnsson es con tu asombrosa voz, ¿te gustaría colaborar también tocando el bajo como haces en Thunderstorms?
Definitivamente, no. ¡Amo a Nalle!

You´re from Croatia and you are a professional Opera singer. How do you decide to participate in Metal bands and Metal projects?
Along with opera, I have always liked metal music, so I patricipated in both genres. After doing classical music, metal seems to be a bit easier and you have more freedom.
Can you tell us some about your influences -in or out Metal scene-?
Vocally I was influenced only by opera singers, such as Renata Tebaldi, Jessye Norman, Brigitte Nielsen, Joan Sutherland and many others. I also like a lot of metal singers, but I just enjoy listening to them – it is a different way of singing, so it doesn’t influence mine.
How did you get involved in Therion? Do you feel a kind of presure to be the one that replaced to Lori Lewis?
My good friend and Christopher’s girlfriend Mina suggested me as a singer, and we started working together. The most difficult was the first rehearsal – the band just came back from their Latin America tour, so they were very tired (I don’t know how they found strength to wake up early and play so good!), and I was getting used to their way of rehearsing and singing together with them. But at the second rehearsal we already sounded like a band that had been playing together for years!
On the rock opera recording you will be able to hear both me and Lori singing soprano parts, which is really nice! At concerts we perform songs from many albums all recorded with different sopranos, so I don’t feel any pressure, I just sing with my own unique voice. It is easy to sing with such great singers as Thomas and Linnea, supported by powerful guitars, orchestras, bass and drums.
Therion is one of the most famous and recognized metal bands worldwide. What means for you and your career as singer?
It means a lot of positive emotions, beautiful music, great performances, and – what you can’t have at classical music concerts – the waving sea of people singing along with you!
Are you leaving your other projects? [Ken Zuruck and Thunderstorm]?
I am not leaving them, but right now both me and other band members are too busy to work on that – maybe we will find more time in the future.
You´d been in two shows until now,[Sweden Rock Fest and ArtMania Fest]. HOw do you feel the fans and your band mates reactions?
The reactions were very positive, and I loved the way festivals were organized. At each festival we performed pretty late, so it was chilly – but all the fans were so fresh and active! We had a wonderful time!
Your colaboration with Christofer Johnsson is with your awesome voice, Do you like to make something with your talent in the bass as you makes in Thunderstorm?
Definitely not, I love Nalle!
