Apoptygma Berzerk volverá a México para presentarse en El Plaza Condesa de nuestra capital este próximo 27 de Septiembre. Stephan Groth, lider y vocalista de la icónica agrupación noruega nos concedió algunos minutos para platicar sobre este show, el futuro de la banda y hasta su opinión del conflicto en Medio Oriente.
– A principios de este mismo año, lanzaron un nuevo EP llamado ‘Stop feading the Beast’. Es distinto, oscuro y bastante cool. ¿Por qué decidir experimentar con esta clase de sonidos?
Bueno, ‘Stop feading the Beast’ fue simplemente un proyecto artístico que yo quería hacer, pues abandoné mi disquera y entonces estuve libre de hacer cosas “raras” y experimentales de nuevo.
Siempre he estado muy influenciado por la música electrónica experimental de los 70s y los 80s. Buscaba hacer una real pieza de arte física, algo que valiera más la pena que solamente una canción en la forma de un MP3. Es por eso que lanzamos ‘Stop feading the Beast’ en formato vinil limitado.
– Han pasado ya 5 años desde la última vez que vimos un álbum de estudio de Apoptygma Berzerk [‘Rocket Science’ en 2009]. ¿Podemos esperar algo nuevo próximamente?
Oh, si. he estado trabajando en un álbum nuevo por varios años ya. No he podido terminarlo todavía, por varias cosas que han sucedido en mi vida personal. Pero estará terminado y listo para ver la luz muy pronto, eso espero.
Las canciones están escritas y grabadas desde hace mucho tiempo, pero no he logrado hacerlas sonar del modo en el que yo quiero todavía. Pero si, estoy en eso.
– Ultimamente te has puesto muuuuy retro. Tus últimos lanzamientos solamente están disponibles exclusivamente en vinilo o en cassette…
Es que yo amo -y extraño- esos días en el que el vinilo “gobernaba al mundo”.
Creo que la música significaba mucho más para las personas en esos días. Los artistas eran tomados más seriamente y la música era mejor.
Creo que es muy triste que la industria musical no haya podido encontrar un formato nuevo que trabaje tan bien como el vinilo. Simplemente el MP3 no es suficiente para mi… podrá ser muy útil y conveniente, pero solamente como herramienta o para una “solución rápida”. No puedes “amar” un archivo digital en tu disco duro. Tener una pieza de arte colgando en tu pared es totalmente distinto a simplemente ver una fotografía en un sitio web.
– A lo largo de tu carrera, haz dejado bien en claro que no ves a Apoptygma Berzerk como una banda de Industrial. Entonces, ¿cómo la ves?
No creo que Apoptygma Berzerk encaje en UNA sola categoría. No quiero limitarme a mi mismo a hacer siempre el mismo tipo de música.
Eso si, en su núcleo, Apoptygma es una banda electrónica. Llámala Electro-Pop, Electro-Rock… No sé.
– Siempre, tus letras han estado cargadas de controversia, con temas como la religión y la política… ¡vamos a ponernos actuales! ¿Cómo ves la “guerra” entre Palestina e Israel?
Eso es un tema muy complejo. Es un “guerra” que se ha dado ya por demasiado tiempo. Imperios y varios grupos de personas han estado peleando para obtener ese pequeño pedazo de tierra por siglos. Es algo muchisimo más grande que la batalla que se está dado en este momento.
Ciertas fuerzas detrás de la cortina querían que esto pasara. Es un conflicto muy inteligentemente diseñado, y estoy seguro que el resultado afectará al mundo entero en formas en las que ni siquiera podemos imaginar el día de hoy. A los medios, no les creo ni una palabra de lo que dicen sobre el conflicto. Todo se ha convertido en una guerra mediática tratando de moldear la opinión pública. Me siento realmente mal por toda esa gente inocente sufriendo en ambos lados [del conflicto].
– Y bueno, ¿entonces el sistema está destinado a morir o todos nosotros moriremos antes de que suceda?
¡El sistema siempre gana! A menos que la gente despierte y tome medidas…
– Pero bueno, finalmente estarás de regreso en México en Septiembre, ¿qué piensas de nuestra escena electro?
¡Estoy muy emocionado de volver a México! [sonríe]. Apoptygma ha tocado ahí dos veces ya, y ambas ocasiones han sido experiencias grandiosas.
Como solamente he estado dos veces ahí, la verdad es que realmente no conozco mucho la escena local, pero lo que he podido ver es que al parecer hay una fanbase muy leal y una enorme cantidad de gente que ama la música electrónica; el ambiente perfecto para un concierto de Apoptygma Berzerk.
– ¿Por qué los mexicanos aman tanto tu música?
Supongo que es porque los mexicanos tienen un muy buen gusto musical. [ríe]
– ¿Qué sigue ahora para la banda?
Después del show en México, regresaremos a trabajar al estudio y trataremos de terminar el nuevo álbum tan pronto sea posible.
Tenemos también un par de shows programados para antes de que termine el 2014, pero si, el nuevo disco y una buena cantidad de emocionantes remixes, son mi prioridad número uno para el resto del año.
– ¿Algo que quieras decirle a tus fans en México?
¡No puedo esperar para verlos! Gracias por permanecer tan leales, ¡APOP los ama!

– Earlier this year, you released a new EP named, ‘Stop feading the Beast’. Is different, is dark, and is pretty cool. Why do you decide to experiment with this kind of sounds?
“Stop Feeding The Beast” was simply just an art project that i wanted to do, because i left my record company and therefore was free to do “weird” and experimental stuff again.
I was always very influenced by 70s and 80s experimental electronic music. I wanted to make a true physical piece of art, something that is worth something more than just a song in the form of an mp3. Therefore we only released S.F.T.B on limited edition vinyl.
– 5 years has passed since your last studio album [Rocket Science in 2009], are you working on it?
Oh yes, I`ve been working on a new album for several years now.
I have not been able to finish it yet, due to things going on in my personal life. It will be done and ready to be release pretty soon i hope.
The songs have been written and recorded a long time ago, but I haven`t been able to make everything sound the way i wanted it to yet.
So yes, I`m working on it.
– You´ve been soooo retro lately. You releases are available on vinil or cassette…
I love and miss the days when vinyl “ruled the world”.
I think that music meant more to people back then. Artists where taken more serious, and the music was better.
I think it is sad that the record industry has not come up with a new format that works as well as vinyl.
mp3s does not cut it for me… They are highly useful and convenient, but only as a tool, or to get a “quick fix”.
You cant “love” a digital file on your hard drive. Having a real piece of art hanging on your wall is quite different than looking at a picture on a webpage.
– Had stated that you do not see APOP as an Industrial act. So, how do you see APOP?
I dont think APOP fit into just ONE category. I dont want to limit myself to make only one type of music.
Then again, APOP is definitely electronic at its core! Call it Electro Pop, Electro Rock… ? I don´t know.
– Your lyrics are always pretty controversial, with topics like religion and politics… So, let´s be actual. What do you say about the Israel -Palestinian “war”?
This is a very complex theme. It is a “war” that has been going on for a very long time. Empires and groups of people have been fighting to get a hold of this tiny little piece of land for centuries. This is all a way bigger thing than just the war going on at the moment. Certain forces behind the scenes want this war to happen. Its a very cleverly designed conflict that is going on, and Im convinced that the outcome will affect the whole world in ways that we can not even imagine today. I dont believe a word of what the media is telling us about this conflict. The whole thing has turned into a media-war trying to shape public opinion. I feel very sorry for all the innocent people who are suffering ON BOTH SIDES !
– Is the system destined to die? Or we will die before it?
The system will always win, unless people wake up and take action.
– You´ll be back in Mexico in September, what do you think about mexican scene?
We are so excited to go back to Mexico 🙂 APOP has played there 2 times before, and both times it was absolutely amazing experiences!
Since I have only been there twice I dont know much about the local scene, but from what I have gathered, It seems like there is a very loyal fan-base + a huge amount of people who love electronic music… and that is the perfect environment for an APOP concert.
– Why do you think your music enganges so many people in Mexico?:
I guess its because Mexicans have a good taste in music.
– What´s the next for APOP?
After the Mexico show, we will continue the studio work and try to finish the new album asap.
There are a few more shows coming up before the end of 2014, but the new album + a lot of VERY exciting remix projects that I`m doing at the moment, will have the 1st. priority for the rest of this year.
– Something you want to say to your mexican fanbase that will see you next month?
