Mikko Karmila, the producer, recording engineer and mixer whose career became closely tied to the development and international expansion of Finnish rock and metal, died on September 9 at the age of 62. His death was confirmed on Thursday by Finland\u2019s Digital and Population Data Services Agency to public broadcaster Yle. No cause of death has been made public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Born on February 3, 1964, in Lohja, Karmila worked behind the console for more than four decades and contributed to more than 300 albums as a producer, engineer, mixer or in several of those roles at once. His name appeared repeatedly in the credits of records by Nightwish, Children of Bodom, Stratovarius, Amorphis, Sonata Arctica, Kotiteollisuus, Waltari, Lordi, Norther, Charon, Tarot, Don Huonot and many other artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His professional career began to take shape during the 1980s around Stone, one of the foundational bands of Finnish thrash metal. Karmila initially worked on the group\u2019s demos and later on its albums, while also serving as a live sound engineer. He subsequently developed a long association with Finnvox Studios, where his work would become a recurring reference point for Finnish heavy-music production throughout the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That period coincided with the international breakthrough of an entire generation of Finnish bands. Karmila\u2019s importance was not limited to recording those groups, but also to helping translate their ambitions into albums capable of retaining clarity, power and personality even as the arrangements became increasingly dense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
