Lustmord Lombardo, the collaboration between dark ambient pioneer Lustmord and percussionist Dave Lombardo, have released \u201cThe Desolate Shore Part I: Submergence,\u201d the second preview of their debut album The Pulse of Atoms, due October 2 through Ipecac Recordings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The piece operates far outside conventional rock or metal structures. Low-frequency atmospheres unfold gradually as Lombardo\u2019s percussion shifts underneath them, introducing movement without settling into a predictable pulse. Lombardo describes it as a meditative landscape and a slow descent into the abyss, with the rhythms creating the impression that the ground itself is never entirely still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It follows \u201cPaleomagnetic Resonance,\u201d the eight-minute composition that first revealed the scale and intent of the collaboration. For Lustmord, resisting easy classification is central to the record. Rather than drawing from an immediately recognizable genre or period, The Pulse of Atoms was conceived as something more elemental and detached from familiar musical language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That philosophy shaped the recording process itself. Lustmord constructed evolving walls, spaces and vortices of sound rather than traditional song frameworks, leaving room for Lombardo to add drums, percussion and synthesizer layers. Lustmord subsequently handled the final editing process alongside the album\u2019s mixing and mastering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
