There are bands that use darkness as an aesthetic, and there are others that, over time, find it sitting far too close to home for it to remain fictional. Mastodon has belonged to the latter category for years. Illness, death, fear and grief have appeared repeatedly throughout their music, but rarely as abstract ideas. Behind several of their records are deeply personal experiences that the members of the band have eventually processed through songs. In 2026, that relationship between creation and loss once again occupies a central place, although this time the circumstances seem even harder to separate from Mastodon's own history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Their ninth studio album, Marrow Deep, arrived on August 28, 2026, following one of the most difficult periods the band has endured. The record began taking shape before every loss surrounding it had occurred, but its development was inevitably affected by what followed. For Brann Dailor, in particular, that period included the death of his mother, Michele Lawrence, in February 2025, and several months later the death of Brent Hinds, a man with whom he had shared roughly 25 years of music, touring, conflict, success and a personal relationship far too complicated to be reduced to the word \u201cbandmate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That context lies behind much of Marrow Deep. Dailor has described the album's title as referring to relationships that reach all the way to the marrow, bonds whose depth is difficult to explain from the outside. First there was his mother, and then there was a man with whom he had spent a quarter of a century making art. Loss appears throughout the record because keeping it out would have been almost impossible, but Mastodon has not treated the album as a permanent exercise in sadness. This is not simply a matter of replacing one person or preserving a familiar sound. After more than 25 years, the more complicated question is what it actually means to remain Mastodon when a fundamental part of its history can no longer return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only with the death of Brent Hinds or the loss of his mother, but with everything that comes afterward: returning to the studio, sitting behind a drum kit, finding a melody, recognizing when an idea still feels like Mastodon and deciding that continuing does not have to mean pretending nothing has changed.
