Frank Beard, the drummer who has powered ZZ Top for more than five decades, is currently off the road while dealing with renewed health problems. His condition led to the cancellation of the band\u2019s August 5, 2026 concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No diagnosis has been disclosed, and the band has not established a timetable for Beard\u2019s return. A representative confirmed that Billy Gibbons and Elwood Francis will continue performing with Michael Monahan filling the vacancy behind the drum kit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hollywood Bowl cancellation was initially attributed to unforeseen personnel matters. Gibbons later acknowledged that the band had encountered obstacles it could not overcome and asked fans to remain patient during what he described as a brief interruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ZZ Top also cancelled its August 4 appearance in Chula Vista, California. The band returned to the stage four days later at The Mountain Winery in Saratoga, where Monahan performed in Beard\u2019s place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Health problems also forced Beard to step away from touring in March 2025. At the time, the band said he needed to focus on a medical issue and expected to recover quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Longtime drum technician and percussionist John Douglas replaced him during that absence. Douglas had previously filled in during 2002, when Beard underwent an emergency appendectomy in Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beard later returned and explained that he had been receiving treatment for foot and ankle problems. He missed additional performances during August 2025, with Monahan taking over before the drummer rejoined the band in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The latest absence has understandably raised concern among fans. ZZ Top has not explained whether it is connected to Beard\u2019s earlier medical problems, and there is no confirmed date for his return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beard joined ZZ Top in 1969, shortly before Dusty Hill completed the classic lineup with Billy Gibbons. He has performed on every ZZ Top studio record, beginning with ZZ Top\u2019s First Album in 1971.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was originally credited as \u201cRube Beard\u201d on the debut and again on Tres Hombres. His real name appeared on Rio Grande Mud, and Frank Beard became his permanent album credit after the band\u2019s first several releases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His drumming survived every major transformation in ZZ Top\u2019s history. Beard drove the raw Texas blues of Tres Hombres, the increasingly ambitious production of Deg\u00fcello and the combination of guitar riffs, synthesizers and programmed textures that turned Eliminator into a defining album of the MTV era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His approach remained economical even when the production around him became larger. Beard understood that restraint could create more force than constant activity, and his ability to lock a simple beat into place became one of ZZ Top\u2019s most recognizable musical traits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The band\u2019s visual identity produced an enduring joke: despite his surname, Beard was traditionally the only member of the classic trio without the enormous facial hair worn by Gibbons and Hill.
