IFPI, the RIAA, A2IM, WIN, IMPALA, The Recording Academy (GRAMMYs), SAG-AFTRA, and the Human Artistry Campaign have announced a unified voluntary labeling framework designed to identify the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in sound recordings. The initiative introduces two distinct categories\u2014\"AI-Generated\" and \"AI-Assisted\"\u2014to provide listeners with greater transparency regarding how music has been created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the organizations involved, the labeling framework is intended for broad international adoption across digital music services and industry partners. It has also been designed to evolve as artificial intelligence technology advances and industry requirements continue to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a joint statement, IFPI CEO Vikki Oakley and RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier said the initiative responds directly to growing public demand for transparency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\"Fans want to know whether and how generative AI has been used in the music they listen to. Because human artistry and authenticity remain central to music worldwide, these labels provide an immediately understandable and scalable approach to transparency.\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
The organizations also emphasized that artificial intelligence is being used in multiple creative ways and indicated that the labeling system may expand in the future as adoption increases and new technologies emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The announcement comes as AI-generated music continues to grow rapidly. In April, streaming platform Deezer reported that 44 percent of all newly delivered tracks on its service were generated by artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, Apple Music stated that more than one-third of the tracks uploaded to its platform are \"100% AI,\" highlighting the increasing presence of AI-created recordings across digital services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, many artists are incorporating artificial intelligence into their creative workflow without replacing human composition or performance. Under the new framework, those projects would receive the \"AI-Assisted\" label, while recordings created entirely through generative AI would be identified as \"AI-Generated.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The initiative has also received support from organizations representing the independent music sector. A2IM CEO Ian Harrison said transparency is essential to preserving trust between artists and audiences as AI becomes increasingly common throughout the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
