Sin lugar a dudas, EPICA<\/strong> es hoy por hoy uno de los m\u00e1s grandes representantes del metal sinf\u00f3nico a nivel mundial. Caminando junto a Simone Simmons, la banda ha llegado a alturas insospechadas poco tiempo.<\/p>\n

EPICA<\/strong> cumple 10 a\u00f1os de existencia y lo celebra con el lanzamiento de su nuevo \u00e1lbum\/DVD en vivo, “Retrospect”<\/em>, por lo cual, SUMMA Inferno<\/strong> tuvo una charla con el baterista de la agrupaci\u00f3n, Ari\u00ebn van Weesenbeek<\/strong> sobre el lanzamiento de este nuevo material y aprovechamos para preguntar si una visita a M\u00e9xico est\u00e1 entre sus planes pr\u00f3ximos.<\/p>\n

“Retrospect” estar\u00e1 a la venta el 8 de Noviembre en formato DVD y BluRay.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Pues acaban de lanzar “Retrospect”…\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a1Si! Y fue una experiencia asombrosa, impresionante y muy retadora, un proyecto del cual estamos muy orgullosos.
\nBuscabamos celebrar el d\u00e9cimo aniversario de Epica de gran manera y quer\u00edamos compartirlo con nuestros admirables fans. Queriamos hacer algo que durara por siempre y que cuando lo vieramos hac\u00eda atr\u00e1s con orgullo. \u00a1Ha sido una gran experiencia volver todos esos planes realidad! El haber un gran show con una orquesta y coros sobre una enorme escenario frente a 4,500 de nuestros amados fans fue simplemente una emoci\u00f3n de por vida. Tratamos de dar el mejor espect\u00e1culo posible, con un gran sonido y sistema de luces, adem\u00e1s de elementos extras en el show. Pienso que hicimos un gran trabajo y estoy orgulloso de ello.<\/p>\n

No s\u00e9 si es una nueva tendencia. Solamente tuvimos ganas de hacerlo y presentar tambi\u00e9n nuestro DVD\/BluRay con estilo, no solo con un mensaje en Internet. As\u00ed que mostrarlo en cines nos pareci\u00f3 una gran idea. Y estoy seguro que la gente que vaya a los cines estar\u00e1 de acuerdo.<\/p>\n

10 a\u00f1os. No es una meta f\u00e1cil para una banda que busque crecer en el medio y permanecer en el. \u00bfQu\u00e9 ha cambiado en ustedes a lo largo del tiempo?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nos volvimos m\u00e1s y m\u00e1s profesionales. Tratamos de evolucionar como banda y como m\u00fasicos en general. Siempre tratamos de evitar el estancamiento, pues eso hubiera matado a Epica, o a cualquier banda a la larga. La evoluci\u00f3n siempre ha sido nuestra clave, en cuanto la composici\u00f3n de canciones, creando albumes, realizando shows, ampliando nuestra producci\u00f3n sobre el escenario… Queremos desafiarnos a nosotros mismos, \u00bfsabes?<\/p>\n

Pues sus shows han crecido bastante, lo podemos ver en “Retrospect”, \u00bfC\u00f3mo ves?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a1Definitivamente! Es lo que representa Epica estos dias. Ya no podemos solo tocar sin ning\u00fan efecto visual, pero al mismo tiempo no queremos depender de eso. La m\u00fasica debe seguir siendo lo suficientemente fuerte, pero definitivamente van mano a mano, porque es lo que hemos estado trabajando los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os. Y “Retrospect” es una hermosa descripci\u00f3n de todo eso. \u00a1Es Epica al 100%!<\/p>\n

\u00bfCrees que la contante salida de miembros ha afectado -de cualquier manera, buena o mala- el sonido de la banda?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Creo que el cambio en la alineaci\u00f3n nos ha dado un sonido mucho mejor y mucho m\u00e1s evolucionado. Y sobre todo: M\u00e1s creatividad y oportunidades. Tenemos un gran equipo ahora, y si hablo por mi mismo como baterista, tengo un estilo totalmente distinto al que Jeroen Simmons tenia y creo que mi estilo encaja en Epica mucho mejor.
\nEs mucho m\u00e1s pesado desde 2007 y eso era lo que la banda hab\u00eda estado buscando. La historia de Isaac es similar. \u00a1Necesitabamos un guitarrista que pensara como guitarrista! Ad -Sluijter-\u00a0era m\u00e1s como un guitarrista ritmico, que no tocaba muchos solos de guitarra, \u00a1y los solos de guitarra encajan perfectamente con el sonido de Epica! Isaac es mas aventurero al tocar y por eso encaja perfecto con la banda. Eso definitivamente cambi\u00f3 el sonido en general.<\/p>\n

Recordamos sus \u00faltimos shows en M\u00e9xico -Hell & Heaven Fest- con Simone embarazada. \u00bfTiempos dificiles? Supongo que debieron ser muy cuidadosos… \u00bfCambi\u00f3 su rutina?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tocamos de la misma manera que siempre: Llenos de energ\u00eda [Risas]. Pero por supuesto, Simone ten\u00eda que ser muy cuidadosa, y nosotros ten\u00edamos que ser cuidadosos con ella tambi\u00e9n. Ella hizo un gran trabajo en esos conciertos, estando con un embarazo muy avanzado, y no debi\u00f3 ser f\u00e1cil para ella. Recientemente di\u00f3 a luz y poco a poco se va recuperando y volviendo a ser la de antes.<\/p>\n

Epica en M\u00e9xico es siempre un \u00e9xito seguro, \u00bfPor qu\u00e9? \u00bfPor qu\u00e9 la conexi\u00f3n con nuestro pais?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a1Ni idea! No tengo ni una pista de porque tenemos una conexi\u00f3n tan fuerte, \u00a1Pero estoy muy feliz de que la tengamos! Siempre es una verdadera fiesta venir a tocar a M\u00e9xico para todos nuestros fans leales. Sin ellos, no seriamos nada en M\u00e9xico. Asi que \u00a1Muchas gracias comadres y compadres! \u00bfY tienen planeado venir pronto? Ya los extra\u00f1amos…<\/strong><\/p>\n

Por ahora, no tenemos nada agendado para M\u00e9xico pero definitivamente volveremos despu\u00e9s del lanzamiento del pr\u00f3ximo disco.<\/p>\n

Respetamos a todas las bandas, y nos llevamos bien. Hacemos lo nuestro y ellos hacen lo suyo, ya sabes. Es bueno que la escena siga floreciendo.<\/p>\n

Ustedes son m\u00fasicos bastante vers\u00e1tiles, \u00bfQue tal van sus proyectos alternos?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bueno, Mark, Rob y yo tocamos en Mayan, como debes saber. Yo toco donde sea que puedo, en todos los estilos posibles. Me unir\u00e9 al Christmas Metal Symphony Tour que cruzar\u00e1 por Europa Oriental por 12 dias, \u00a1Y ya deseo que llegue!
\nTocar cada noche con grandiosos cantantes famosos, junto a una orquesta y un coro, \u00a1ser\u00e1 demoledor!<\/p>\n

It’s been an amazing, headbreaking, challenging project, which we are very proud of!
\nWe wanted to celebrate a decade of Epica in fine style, and wanted to share this with our admirable fans. We wanted to make a document that would last forever and that we can look back to with pride. It’s been a tremendous experience to realize all those plans into reality! Having performed such a big show with orchestra and choir on a huge stage in front of 4500 dear fans was simply a thrill of a lifetime! We tried to give our best show possible, with incredible sound and light, and extra show elements. I think we did a great job, and I’m proud of it!<\/p>\n

\u201cRetrospect\u201d will be on cinemas, Is a new trending? A lot of bands are testing this new way to show live performances -Metallica, Muse, for example-<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have no idea if it’s a trend or not. We just wanted to do this, and present our Blu-ray\/DVD in style, not just a message on internet. So to present it in cimenas seemed like a great idea. I’m sure that the people who go to the cinema premiere will agree.<\/p>\n

10 years. Not an easy goal for most of the bands that appears and try to grow and stay. What had changed in you and in the band over time?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We became more and more professional. We try to evolve as a band, and as musicians in general. We always try to avoid stagnation, because that would kill Epica, or any band on longer term. Evolution has always been the key for us, regarding songwriting, creating albums, performing at our shows, expanding our production on stage…. We want to challenge ourselves, you know?<\/p>\n

\u00a0Also, your live shows are bigger. We can see it in “Retrospect”…. What do you think?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Definitely! It’s what Epica stands for these days. We can’t just play without any visual effects anymore, but at the same time we don’t want to be too dependant on that. The music has to remain strong enough. But they definitely go hand in hand, so that what we’ve working on for the past few years. And Retrospect is a beautiful documentation of such a show. It’s Epica 100%!<\/p>\n

\u00a0Do you think the constant output of member has affected -in anyway, good or bad- the sound in Epica?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think that the change of line up in the band has given us a much better and more evolving sound. And most of all: more creativity and opportunities. We have a great team now, and if I speak for myself as a drummer, I have a totally different style than Jeroen Simons has, and I think my style fits Epica much better. It’s much heavier since 2007, and that’s what the band was looking for. With Isaac it’s a comparable story: we needed a guitarplayer who thinks as a guitar player. Ad was more of a rythmic guitar player, who didn’t want to play too many guitar solos, but guitar solos fit the Epica sound perfectly! Isaac plays more adventurous and it just fits better in the band. It definitely changed the sound in general.<\/p>\n

We can remember one of your lasts performances in Mexico -Hell & Heaven Fest- with a pregnant Simone. Was a hard time? We guess you should be highly careful… That meaned a lot of changes in your -musical- routine? <\/strong><\/p>\n

We played the same show as we always did: full of energy, haha. Of course, Simone had to be more careful, and we had to be more careful with her as well. She did a great job these last shows when she was heavily pregnant, and it must not have been easy for her. She recently gave birth, and is slowly recovering and getting back into her old self again.<\/p>\n

Epica in Mexico is always a sucess. Why? Why that huge connection with our country?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have no clue why we have such a strong connection, but I’m very glad that we do!! It’s always a true party to come and play in Mexico for all our great and loyal fans. Without them, we’d be nowhere in Mexico, so muchos gracias, comadres y compadres!!!<\/p>\n

Are you planning to come back soon? We miss you guys…<\/strong><\/p>\n

We haven’t booked any tours yet in Mexico, but we’re definitely coming back after the release of our new album.<\/p>\n

In your official Facebook page, you posted a message for Nightwish and Floor Jansen. Are you friends? How is the relationship with other bands of the genre?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We respect all the other bands and we get along just fine. We do what we do, and they do their thing, you know. It’s great that this scene is so flourishing.<\/p>\n

Your\u00b4re very verstail musicians, and have side-projects. What about that?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, Mark, Rob and myself play in MaYan, as you might know. I play whenever I can, in what style possible. I’ll be joining the Christmas Metal Symphony tour in december this year throughout Western Europe for 12 days, which I’m looking forward to! Playing every night with some cool famous singers, and an orchestra and choir is going to be killer!!!<\/p>\n
